Ft Drum Welcome Letters

Welcome to Fort Drum and the North Country, home of the 10th Mountain Division. I honestly believe that you have been assigned to the greatest military community in the country. Thanks to the efforts of the Soldiers, DA Civilians, Family members, contractors and members of the local communities, Fort Drum continues to be recognized as a Community of Excellence among the Army’s top installations. You will quickly find that there is a lot to do on the installation and the surrounding area year-round.

As a “Mountaineer,” take pride in knowing that you are joining a Family with a proud history of service. Since the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) reactivation Feb. 13, 1985, here at Fort Drum, New York, its Soldiers have participated in many operations and relief efforts around the globe to include: operations Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, Resolute Support and Inherent Resolve. They have been essential in humanitarian relief missions, helping those in need, here in the United States and abroad, in places such as Somalia, Bosnia and Haiti. Our mission-readiness and taking care of our Soldiers and Families will continue to remain our top two priorities.

Through the coming year, many members of the Fort Drum Team will likely deploy forward in support of ongoing contingency and relief operations around the globe. Ensure that you take the time to review this guide with Family and friends as it will provide a wealth of information on services and activities across the division and installation. Information within its pages contains contact and detailed information on units, Army Community Services; Family Readiness groups; Morale, Welfare and Recreation; Emergency Services; Directorate Public Works; and religious support centers to name a few.

Again, on behalf of the entire command team, I welcome you to Fort Drum and the greater Thousand Islands region. I encourage each of you to take advantage of all the activities and services that both the installation and the North Country provide.

Climb to Glory!

Major General, U.S. Army
Fort Drum & 10th Mountain Division (LI) Commanding General

On behalf of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) and Fort Drum command staff, I would like to welcome you to Fort Drum.

Fort Drum is a truly unique place to be stationed. We take training and education seriously, and you will have training opportunities that are just not available elsewhere. We not only have the Light Fighter School, a premier school for the light infantry Soldier, but also provide on-base courses from five different colleges. We provide an optimal environment for a well-rounded Soldier, a physical and mental warrior.

Fort Drum provides a dynamic and comfortable environment for both Soldiers and their Families. Use this guidebook to point you in the right direction when discovering some of the many great historic sites and recreational spots in the Thousand Islands region, but don’t stop there. Seek out other Soldiers, Families and leaders for information and experiences, and take the opportunity to share information with the new members of Team Drum who come after you.

I hope that you enjoy your time here at Fort Drum. I trust that it will become one of the best experiences of your career as a Soldier.

Climb to Glory!
