The Army Medical Department supports the
war effort by providing the highest quality and
most advanced medical care for Soldiers on the
battlefield—saving more lives of Soldiers
wounded in combat than ever before. Army
leaders and medical professionals know that
some wounds lie beneath the surface and are not
always visible upon first assessment.
In an effort to ensure that injured warriors
receive the appropriate assessments and highest
level of outpatient care, the Army established
the Warrior Transition Program.
Fort Leonard Wood's WTU was established in
June 2007 and currently has over 130 Warriors in
Transition. Besides Fort Leonard Wood, the unit is
responsible for Wounded Warriors throughout the
state of Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, and Canada.
A Warrior in Transition is an Active Component
or Reserve Component Soldier who meets
the qualifications of Medical Hold, Medical
Holdover, or Active Duty Medical Extension. It
also includes Active Component Soldiers who
require a Medical Evaluation Board or have
complex medical needs requiring greater than
six months of treatment.
Fort Leonard Wood's Warrior Transition Unit
provides command and control, primary care,
and case management for service members
receiving treatment for injuries suffered while deployed in the war on terror. The unit works to
promote every injured warrior's timely return to
the force or transition to civilian life.
