On behalf of the entire command and our many tenants, I would like to welcome you to Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, Ga.
Located in Southwest Georgia, the base occupies approximately 3,600 acres within Dougherty County, and is a vital strategic asset to the Marine Corps and the nation.
Whether you work or live aboard the base, or are just visiting, we are happy to have you be a part of what we do here. We at MCLB Albany are proud of what this base represents both for our local community and for the entire Marine Corps.
The base was commissioned in 1952 as the Marine Corps Depot of Supplies. Since then, the base has gone through a number of changes, finally settling on Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany in 1978, its present name. We are one of two logistics bases in the Marine Corps—the other is located in Barstow, Calif.
The mission of Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany is to provide facilities, infrastructure, and a range of tailored support services enabling supported commands aboard the installation to accomplish their assigned missions in support of the warfighter. We host many tenant organizations, the largest being Marine Corps Logistics Command. Maintenance center Albany, a subordinate command of LOGCOM, repairs, rebuilds and modifies all types of Marine Corps ground combat, combat support and combat service support equipment, all of which keep the Marine Corps operating successfully.
The base plays a strategic role as a part of the Marine Corps' efforts in the "Long War." Vehicles and other equipment damaged in Iraq or Afghanistan are brought through LOGCOM to maintenance center depots for repair and rebuild. LOGCOM also provides extensive world-wide logistics support for Marine Corps involvement in Overseas Contingency Operations. LOGCOM's MCA has provided numerous innovative methods for overcoming combat threats, such as developing mine roller technology, installing new armor and decreasing repair time to get vehicles rapidly to our warfighters. The combined efforts of the base and our tenants are critical to keeping those Marines in harms' way as safe as possible. We have safe, clean, working and living areas here, and we want to make efficient use of natural resources while conserving energy through awareness and new technology.
We want to provide a high quality of life to all of our service members, civilian-Marines and family members. Two years ago, the base began a new housing construction project. In October, 110 new homes opened, giving our families a new, modern place to live. We are also in the process of renovating buildings, replacing infrastructure and planning construction of a new barracks, all to increase the quality of life here for everyone. One of the best reasons to enjoy being stationed here is the wonderful community around us. We are blessed to have the support of the surrounding counties and the City of Albany, and proud to be a part of this local area that has such a rich heritage. This is southern living. Here our oak trees grow tall and our fields stretch far. Here you can enjoy the outdoors to your hearts' delight. Here southern hospitality is a way of life. Here is a place you can truly call home.
Whether assigned to the base or a tenant command, a family member, or passing through, thank you for being a part of MCLB Albany, and once again, welcome!
Col. Terry V. Williams
