Off-base Ocean Fishing
Oceanside Harbor
Harbor Drive North and Harbor Drive South Oceanside, CA 92054
Located at the north end of Oceanside, Oceanside Harbor has two sections: The southern section has a small commercial fishing fleet, sportsfishing, and watersports rentals. Helgren's Sportsfishing, located at Harbor Village, has daily charters and rentals, (760) 722-2133. The north section has a marina with slips for recreational boaters.

In all, Oceanside Harbor has over 900 permanent slips with an average occupancy rate of over 90 percent. In addition, three yacht brokers provide boat sales, chandlery, maintenance, repair, charters and sailing instruction. The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Point Hobart makes Oceanside Harbor its home.

Oceanside Harbor has much to offer the 200,000 people who visit each year. For the recreational boater and sports fisher, there is a fuel dock, four-lane launch ramp, bait receiver, slip rentals, including electricity, water and newly reconstructed service buildings that contain restrooms, showers, laundry facilities and coin-operated water dispensing machines.

The harbor has 50 transient slips for guest boaters, which are busy year-round. Harbor Village is a collection of specialty shops, restaurants, and a sports fishing center. The wood-framed buildings, steep shingle roofs and lighthouse are reminiscent of an old fishing village.

Oceanside Pier

1 Oceanside Pier
Oceanside, CA 92054
Only a mile from Ocean Harbor, this pier, at 1,954 feet, is the longest wooden pier on the west coast. Half-way down Oceanside Pier are restrooms and a bait and tackle shop, with snacks, postcards and drinks for sale. At the end is a restaurant, Ruby's Diner (760) 433-7829.

You'll see many people fishing and have a wonderful view of the surfers, beach, and coastline with the mountains as a backdrop. On a clear day, you'll be able to see La Jolla, the Coronado Islands and Catalina Island.

Deep-Sea Fishing
The Catch
The waters off the San Diego coast and south to Baja are among the best in the world for deepsea fishing. Each summer, the warm waters attract a huge number and selection of fish. From three to 10 miles offshore, the catch includes calico bass, sand bass, white sea bass, barracuda, mackerel and dorado. Venture out 60 to 80 miles and you'll find albacore, bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, big eye tuna, skipjack and yellowtail.

The deeper you go, the bigger the fish you're likely to snag. The average tuna or yellowtail might weigh in at 15 to 30 pounds, but it's not unheard of for anglers to reel in a 300-pound monster. A 388-pound mammoth yellowfin tuna was caught in 1977 off the San Diego coast, setting an "all tackle world record" that still stands today.

Where and When to Go

If you're itching to head out to the deep blue, choose from a bevy of sportfishing tours to take you there. But be sure to get references and interview your "Captain" to make sure you are a good fit for what the tour is offering. Helgren's Sportfishing (see Oceanside Harbor) Seaforth Sportfishing, Fisherman's Landing, H&M Sportfishing, Islandia Sportfishing, Point Loma Sportfishing and H&M Sportfishing & Whale are well-known outfits in the San Diego area. Local commercial tour operators offer a variety of trips, from half-day tours to three-week adventures to destinations like the Coronado Islands, just off the Baja coast.

As the water temperature lowers in winter months, fish head south and tours follow. From December to late spring, tours trek all the way to Cabo San Lucas on the southernmost tip of Baja, or even farther. Many local commercial tour operators also offer whale-watching tours.

Equipment and Licenses
Most sportfishing tours provide rods and other essential gear as part of the overall fee. If you're bringing your own pole, make sure you have a minimum 20-pound tackle. Don't expect to catch any of the giants of the sea with anything smaller. You'll likely get help and advice from the crew as you battle your catch. With their long, hooked spears, crew members can help pluck even the toughest scaly warriors from the water. For Baja trips, you'll need to purchase a separate Mexican fishing permit in addition to a U.S. license. Most tours assist with licenses and permits.
