Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) encompasses more than 11,000 acres in various locations in Washington state, Alaska and British Columbia. NBK’s five main installations are in Kitsap County and include Bangor, Bremerton, Keyport, Manchester and Jackson Park. NBK and its tenant commands feature a plethora of missions, diversity found only in the West Sound’s installations. NBK is home to more than 60 tenant commands staffed by civilians, contractors, Sailors, Marines, Coast Guardsmen and Soldiers, all dedicated to executing our primary mission: support the fleet, fighter and family in the defense and protection of our nation.
In terms of afloat assets, NBK is the homeport for the USS Nimitz (CVN 68) and Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74), eight ballistic missile submarines, three attack submarines, including the uniquely designed USS Jimmy Carter, and two multi-mission, guided missile and special operations submarines. NBK is the only base to host all three classes of nuclear-powered submarines.
On the shore side, our base supports some of the best maintenance and production organizations in the fleet, including Strategic Weapons Facility Pacific and its Marine and Navy Security Group, the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Keyport, Manchester Fuel Depot, and the historic Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility. NBK also hosts three flag commands: Commander Navy Region Northwest, Commander Submarine Group Nine and Commander Carrier Strike Group Three.
Command structure at Naval Base Kitsap includes numerous staff and service organizations that support various programs such as family readiness groups, child care, housing for married and single service members, and fitness facilities. In addition to the programs mentioned, Naval Base Kitsap’s commissaries, exchanges, and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) facilities are among the best in the fleet, providing support to more than 100,000 active-duty and retired service members in our area.
An integral part of our five surrounding communities, NBK provides mutual aid in the form of fire, rescue, medical and hazardous material responses averaging two responses in the local community each day. The base is an active member of 16 community organizations that foster strategic alliances for business and local government development, as well as volunteerism.
