Kitsap | Naval Base Kitsap

Naval Base Kitsap is host command for forty-five real properties (land, buildings or facilities) encompassing over 10,000 acres in various locations in Alaska, Idaho and British Columbia, as well as our primary bases in Washington State. The five main installations in Kitsap County; Bangor, Bremerton, Keyport, Manchester and Jackson Park include diversified missions found together nowhere else in the Navy. On these bases alone, there are over sixty tenant commands made up of civilian, contractor, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Army professionals who are all dedicated to the support and operation of our primary mission: to support the fleet, fighter, and family in the defense and protection of our nation.

The Mission of Naval Base Kitsap is to serve as the host command for the Navy’s fleet throughout West Puget Sound, and to provide base operating services, including support to a nuclear powered aircraft carrier, two Military Sealift Command combat logistic ships, a submarine tender and fourteen submarines representing all three classes of U.S. Navy submarines. Evidence of our drive for excellence is reflected within numerous food service, environmental, energy reductions, and pollution control awards received during this award evaluation period.

Our main bases berth the nuclear powered aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis, eight Ohio Class ballistic missile submarines, four attack submarines, including the uniquely designed USS Jimmy Carter, and two of the multi-mission guided missile and special operations SSGNs. Naval Base Kitsap is the only base to host three classes of nuclear powered submarines. On the shore side, our base supports some of the best maintenance and production organizations in the fleet, including historic Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS and IMF), Strategic Weapons Facility Pacific (SWFPAC) and its Marine and Navy Security Group, the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Detachment Keyport and Manchester Fuel Depot. In the past year we conducted 85 visits for over 4000 visitors to various Naval Base Kitsap locations for aircraft carrier, submarine, museum and ship reunion tours.

Command structure at Naval Base Kitsap includes numerous staff and service organizations that support various programs such as family readiness groups, childcare programs, housing initiatives for married and single service members, Homeport Ashore and physical readiness programs for all hands. Three flag commands are base tenants: Commander Navy Region Northwest, Commander Submarine Group Trident andCommander Carrier Strike Group Three; as well as security, emergency response, fire and medical. Naval Hospital Bremerton is our close neighbor and mission support partner. Additionally, the commissaries, exchanges, Morale Welfare and Recreation (MWR) facilities are among the best in the fleet, providing support to over 100,000 active duty and retired people in our area. An integral part of our five surrounding communities, Naval Base Kitsap provides mutual aide in the form of fire, rescue, medical and hazardous material responses averaging two times daily. The base is an active member of sixteen community organizations that foster both volunteerism and strategic alliances for business and local government development.

Naval Base Kitsap’s legacy of superior service was recognized in several awards in 2008. Naval Base Kitsap sustained excellence in complying with energy conservation, earning the Secretary of the Navy Platinum Level of Achievement at Bremerton and Bangor while tenant command, Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Division Keyport also won Platinum Level recognition. Our largest tenant, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility won the prestigious Secretary of the Navy FY 2008 Energy Award-Industrial. “Service to the Servicemen and Women” is particularly noteworthy at Naval Base Kitsap by consistent awards in 5-star excellence at the base galleys and a DoD award for environmental achievement in Pollution Prevention.

Excellence is the standard for Naval Base Kitsap. The gathering of the forces mentioned above, deserve no less. Partnering, cooperating, and teaming are the way of life and the means by which the highest quality of Fleet, Fighter and Family support could be attained.
