MILITARY HEALTH SYSTEM
America's Military Health System (MHS) is a unique partnership of medical educators, medical researchers and healthcare providers and their support personnel worldwide. This DoD enterprise consists of the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs; the medical departments of theArmy, Navy, Marine Corps,Air Force, Coast Guard and Joint Chiefs of Staff; the Combatant Command surgeons; and TRICARE providers (including private sector healthcare providers, hospitals and pharmacies).

TRICARE
TRICARE is the Department of Defense's health care program for active-duty military members, retirees, eligible Reservists and Guard members, and their families. With TRICARE beneficiaries can choose from several different health care options in both the United States and overseas, making the program easy for military families to use.

TRICARE services are available through Military Treatment Facilities or civilian health care providers. Understanding how TRICARE works will help you and your family take advantage of this benefit.

Although TRICARE manages the health care program, the service branches determine eligibility. Your installation's personnel office can help you with eligibility determination and enrollment.

Eligibility. All active-duty service members, retirees, their spouses and unmarried children (including stepchildren) under the age of 21 (or 23 if attending school full time) are eligible for TRICARE.

Eligibility for Reservists and Guard. Guard and Reserve members called to active duty for 30 consecutive days or more are eligible for comprehensive health coverage through TRICARE, which includes coverage for their family members. Visit the TRICARE Web site at www.tricare.osd.mil/reserve for specific details.

Defense Eligibility and Reporting System (DEERS). DEERS validates eligibility for health care benefits. Active-duty military members and retirees are automatically enrolled in DEERS; however, you must also make sure your eligible family members are in the system. Enrollment in DEERS can be confirmed through your installation's personnel office or by calling DEERS at (800) 538-9552. More information on DEERS is available at www.tricare.osd.mil/deers.
