111TH FIGHTER WING
PENNSYLVANIA AIR
NATIONAL GUARD
The 111th Fighter Wing is an operational
flying unit assigned to the Air Combat
Command. It proudly claims the honor of
being the oldest flying unit within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Its heritage extends back to June 1924 when the group
was a fledging aviation unit of the 28th Division that flew WWII
JN-4 "Jennys" from a sod field now known as the Philadelphia
International Airport. Today, the group flies A/AO-10 Thunderbolts
from the modern runways at Willow Grove Air Reserve
Station, Pa., as well as employs 700 traditional guardsmen and
300 full-time personnel.
Tasked to provide operationally-ready combat units, combat
support units and qualified personnel, the 111th Fighter Wing
supports Air Force war contingency requirements and performs a
variety of peacetime missions required by the Air Force and the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Specifically, the wing is to
organize, train, and equip assigned personnel to provide operationally-
ready forces in order to execute state and federal missions.
