A love letter to the U.S. armed forces

Dear Troops,

On Valentine’s Day, and every day, you richly deserve our love and affection — the magnanimous actions you take support America’s never-ending pursuit of life, liberty and happiness. We live in an extraordinary country, and we rely on your service to help protect our democracy and society. You enrich our lives in ways that no one else can.

We love our airmen who aim high, flying and fighting to protect our freedom even though budget constraints have led to a shortage of 723 fighter pilots.

We love our coasties who are always ready to secure our coasts and save lives even though budget constraints have left them with an aging fleet of cutters in need of repairs.

We love our Marines and their faithful fight to keep us safe even though budget constraints have left them in need of at least 3,000 troops.

We love our sailors who put country before self as all hands on deck battle on our behalf even though budget constraints have left more than half the Navy’s aircraft unable to fly.

We love our soldiers who stay strong while defending us even when only three of the 58 brigade combat teams are ready to fight due to budget constraints.

Fidelity, bravery, security, strength and selflessness are some of the best qualities of love. Is it any wonder that U.S. military forces are beloved by Americans? You make us proud, and you make us want to be better patriots to honor your service. Our love affair burns bright — with no end in sight.

As Will Rogers said, “We can’t all be heroes because somebody has to sit on the curb and clap as they go by.”

For the many sacrifices — moves, separations, anxiety — you and your families make when serving, we applaud you and offer our love, support and gratitude.

Happy Valentine’s Day! Thank you for your service and for all those who serve!
