The state department of health offers programs that deal with social, economic and individual issues, often helping people in crisis situations. The programs are designed to strengthen families and promote self-reliance. In 2016, the state department served more than 352,000 people, more than 20 percent of the state’s total population. The department’s goal is to enrich and protect the lives of our state’s citizens. To that goal, the organization offers services statewide to ensure that water is safe, children are immunized, the elderly are cared for and birth certificates are correct — to name just a few.

The department’s main office is in Boise, with seven regions encompassing the state’s 44 counties. Its website has information on health topics, services available and a listing of local health units by region.

Local health units offer a variety of services, including communicable disease investigation and intervention, family planning, immunizations, STD counseling and testing, WIC and nutrition services, women’s health services and more. Services vary by location. For a full list of local health units, their hours of operation and their available services, visit
