Mountain Home Getting To and Around Driving and Commuting

Mountain Home AFB can be reached by Interstate 84 from the southeast and northwest. In addition to I-84, numerous state routes in Elmore County join it to neighboring counties, among them highways 51, 67 and 20, which converge in Mountain Home and link directly to southwestern Idaho. State Highway 67, a four-lane 10-mile-long road, provides access to Mountain Home Air Force Base.

Motorists can obtain free traffic information and reports from the Idaho Department of Transportation by calling 511 or going to http://511.idaho.gov.

Driver’s Licenses

Military personnel and their spouses who are stationed in Idaho from elsewhere may continue to drive with a valid driver’s license from their home state, but in general, all Idaho residents who want to drive must apply for a driver’s license once residency is established.

The state spells out what is required for licensing and insurance under different scenarios in its Idaho Driver’s Manual, which can be dowloaded at http://itd.idaho.gov/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/driver_manual.pdf.

Distracted Driving

Except for novice drivers, Idaho does not prohibit drivers from making calls on handheld wireless telephones while operating a motor vehicle, but does ban texting for all drivers regardless of age or vehicle type.

Vehicle Registration

Applications associated with driving and vehicle registration are available online at http://itd.idaho.gov/itddmv, including DMV forms, requests for driving records and more.
