Libraries offer learning, recreation and connection for free to their users, and Taylor County has a number of public libraries to serve readers.

Abilene Public Library

The Abilene Public Library has three branches, providing residents with more than 300,000 volumes and a number of library services. Services include Internet access, online databases, children’s reading programs and many other programs and events. Abilene Public Library’s branches serve 42,000 cardholders who check out more than 750,000 materials each year. Hours for all three locations are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday; and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Check with the library for holiday closures.

Merkel Public Library’s collection contains more than 9,300 items, including books and video and audio materials. There are four public computers with Internet access and one children’s computer. Hours are 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
