The National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature in historic downtown Abilene is a museum dedicated to housing the illustrations of children’s books’ authors and illustrators. The NCCIL (pronounced nickel) continually collaborates with award-winning artists to produce quality exhibitions appealing to visitors of all ages. Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Step back in time to meet the men and women who lived and died on the Texas frontier. Find adventure as you walk through tepees, live through a buffalo stampede and explore history from 1780 to 1880. Unlike a traditional museum, Frontier Texas! uses first-person narratives rather than collections of artifacts to tell the story of the western Texas frontier, along with lights, cameras, action and big-screen special effects. Open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
