Many educational opportunities are offered on and off base at Laughlin Air Force Base. Testing services are provided for college-level testing such as the ACT, SAT and CLEP. For specific schedules and availability, call the School Liaison Office at 830-298-4788 or 830-298-5620.
Family and individual counseling services are also provided by licensed counselors on base. All military personnel, retired military personnel and civilian employees as well as their families are eligible.
Three institutions offer undergraduate and graduate programs on base: Embry-Riddle University, Park University and Southwest Texas Junior College, as does Sul Ross State University in Del Rio. Southwest Texas Junior College 803-703-1550 also is in Del Rio.
Airman & Family Readiness Center

The Airman & Family Readiness Center is a one-stop information and referral center and the cornerstone of the Laughlin family support system that helps Airmen and their families improve their readiness and quality of life.
Programs include Information & Referral Resources, Personal & Work Life, Mobilization & Deployment Readiness, Employment & Career Support, Economic Readiness and Support, Disaster Response, Air Force Wounded Warrior and the School Liaison Office.
The center serves active-duty military from all services, Guard and Reserve members, retired military and Department of Defense civilians and their family members. All services are free.
Child Development Center

The Child Development Center offers quality care for children 6 weeks to 5 years old; hourly care is available by reservation on a space-available basis. Programs include full-time weekly care, hourly care and a part-day enrichment program for children 3 to 5 years of age. The center provides a safe, nurturing environment that promotes the social, cognitive, language and physical development of youngsters. All members of the highly trained staff undergo a rigorous background check before employment.
The center provides the following services: Extended Day Care for evenings and weekends, Give Parents a Break; Child Care for PCS, Returning Home Care and Child Care for Volunteers.
Exceptional Family Member Program

Service members who have an exceptional family member or a child who needs early intervention must contact the Exceptional Family Member Program office (EFMP) on arrival at Laughlin AFB. The EFMP office is co-located with the Mental Health Clinic in the Medical Treatment Facility, Bldg. 375. The special needs coordinator can be reached at 830-298-6525.
The EFMP program helps eligible military families who have exceptional medical or educational needs to obtain the services they require and makes sure those services can continue if the families are reassigned. The goals are to increase family self-sufficiency and improve each family’s ability to advocate for itself. The program provides information and referral services and is mandatory for those eligible for enrollment.
Family Child Care

Family Child Care in individual homes provides an alternative to Child Development Center care for families that need evening care, weekend care, care for children with special needs, infants and school-age children as well as care during swing and midnight shifts.
The program also is an opportunity for spouses to contribute to the family income while caring for their own children.
Family Child Care providers are well-trained and undergo a thorough background check. Their homes are inspected for fire safety, health, safety and other requirements. Providers must be certified by the DOD, and some seek additional accreditation from the National Association of Family Child Care. Regulations limit the number of children that may be cared for at one time: no more than six children under age 8, and no more than two children less than 2 years old; children from 2 weeks to 12 years old are eligible.

The School Liaison Office links Laughlin Air Force Base families with public and private schools. Parental deployments, frequent moves, returns, departures and uncertainties place unusual stresses on the military child, and the School Liaison Office provides support during all stages of transition to ensure that children receive every opportunity for quality education.

The Laughlin Youth Program provides activities for pre-teens age 6 through 12 years, and teens age 13 through 18. A computer lab is available to school-age children and center members, with tutoring for homework assistance. Tournaments are offered in table tennis, foosball, Nintendo, air hockey, basketball, baseball and soccer, and social events include dances, movie nights, bingo, craft nights, cooking nights, clubs and outings. Summer camps from June into August develop interests and skills in areas from sports to geocaching, nature to fine arts.

Legal assistance is available for a range of civil legal issues such as family law, consumer or financial matters, wills and estates, powers of attorney and immigration.
Walk-in legal assistance is available from 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesday and 8 to 9 a.m. Thursday. Notary public service and power of attorney preparation can be handled on a walk-in basis during regular office hours.

The Laughlin Library, also known as The Bookmark, is a peaceful place on base where you can escape to read, research or meditate. Its collection consists of Internet-connected computers; Wi-Fi access; adult, young adult and children’s books; DVDs; CDs; audiobooks; downloadable e-books, e-audiobooks and digital magazines; periodicals and newspapers; interlibrary loan; research databases; and a meditation room. The library offers story time Friday mornings and summertime ice cream parties.

At the Auto Craft Center, there are many tools that can be used to keep your vehicle safely on the road. The center stocks NAPA and O’Reilly brand items, and services and items can be paid for by cash, check, MasterCard or Visa, or get cash back with your MWR card. The following resources are available: car wash, tool issue, 27-point inspection, used-car purchase inspection, mechanic service, air conditioner service, four-wheel alignment, rent-a-stall, recycling and service calls.

The Laughlin Saddle Club and Horse Stables offer boarding for privately owned horses with 12 stalls, tack and feed rooms, an outdoor arena, a round pen, a quarantine area and parking for horse trailers. There are facilities for English and Western riding, jumping and gymkhana.
Boarding and self-help services are available to active-duty military members, retirees and DOD civilians. A monthly work day and chores are required, and owners must purchase their own grain, hay and bedding for their horses, clean their stalls and feed them. Foals under 6 months old and stallions are not permitted.

The Leaning Pine Golf Course has a nine-hole golf course with two sets of tees, a driving range, putting green, locker room, golf carts, pull carts, beverages, snacks and a golf pro shop for all your golfing needs.
Tee times for weekends and holidays can be reserved on Wednesdays for active-duty military, and on Thursdays for others. All other play is first come, first served during the week.
Tournaments and catering can be booked through the golf course manager, and the golf course can be reserved for small or large tournaments. The catering service offers an array of selections from hors d’oeuvres to steak cookouts.
