The statewide California Highway Patrol is headed by a commissioner and has 11 field offices and 11 area divisions. The Coastal Division, which includes the County Santa Barbara, has 530 uniformed officers, 162 non-uniformed personnel and 11 area offices, three of those in the County of Santa Barbara: in Buellton, in Santa Maria and in Goleta. The CHP is responsible for highway safety, and for protecting members of the public, their property, state workers and state public property, and also collaborates with local, state and federal public agencies.

The County of Santa Barbara Fire Department blankets the county with 17 fire stations and more than 240 emergency personnel spread over 11 communities. In addition to fighting fires, the department maintains an air support unit for fire, rescue or medevac missions; a heavy equipment construction unit to lay down firebreaks quickly, or help during floods, earthquakes, structure fires, and urban search and rescue; a hazardous materials response team; an urban search and rescue team used in situations like building collapses, cave-ins, earthquakes, explosions, floods and the like; Riley, the yellow Lab half of a search dog team who’s trained to find trapped survivors after disasters; and a water rescue team with both swift-water and ocean expertise.
