For outdoor enjoyment, military members and their families can take advantage of the Birch Lake Recreation Area, 35 miles south of Eielson along the Richardson Highway. The camp is nestled in wilderness on the shore of Birch Lake, which is brimming with rainbow trout and Arctic char. Cabins, camper pads, tent spots, picnic area, boats, canoes and a lodge are available. Activities include boating, canoeing, water skiing, fishing, berry picking, wading and barbecuing. Don’t forget your camera — you’re likely to see wildlife including moose, fox, beaver, a wide variety of waterfowl and an occasional eagle.
