Grand Forks AFB is located 15 miles west of Grand Forks—the third largest city in North Dakota with a population of approximately 53,000 people. The base is 20 miles west of the Minnesota border, 75 miles north of Fargo, North Dakota, and 75 miles south of the Canadian border. The city of Grand Forks is home to the University of North Dakota, and has been ranked by Money Magazine as one of the top communities in the nation. It is located in the heart of the Red River Valley at the junction of the Red Lake River and the Red River of the North.

If driving, the base is located just north of U.S. Highway 2 which runs east-west between Minot, ND, and Grand Forks. Interstate 29 runs north-south, beside the North Dakota/Minnesota border, from South Dakota through Fargo and Grand Forks to Canada.

If flying, Grand Forks International Airport is located only 14 miles from the base and is serviced with daily Delta flights from the Minneapolis Airport. Although listed as an "International" airport because of its proximity to Canada, the airport currently has only two gates. A new terminal building is scheduled to be completed in 2011.
