Air Force Aid Society

Last Updated :

The Air Force Aid Society (AFAS) exists to provide military members and their families assistance in times of need. The philosophy of AFAS assistance is to meet immediate needs in emergency situations as a step toward lasting solutions to a problem.

Loans and Grants. Emergency Assistance can be given as an interest free loan, a grant, or a combination of both. The majority of AFAS assistance is provided in the form of interest-free loans with repayment of these loans used to fund future assistance.

Assistance Policy. Each case is evaluated on its own merits. Emergency assistance is given when:
• A member cannot otherwise pay for specific basic needs - lack of which would affect the member’s Air Force job or the essential quality and dignity of life.
• The need is essential.
• It is aimed at specific needs and generally limited to relatively short-term periods.

Emergency assistance is not given:
• If it postpones a long-term inability to exist on present pay and allowances.
• For continuous long-term assistance.
• To replace funds due to garnishment (e.g. AAFES Military Star Card, government issued travel cards and military fines).
Casualty Assistance Program. The Air Force provides casualty assistance to family members and other designated beneficiaries of deceased members. Casualty assistance includes counseling regarding rights, benefits and entitlements; completing claim applications for monetary benefits and privileges; and to help resolve any problems or concerns the next-of-kin may encounter.
