Education Options

Last Updated :

The public and private school systems in our area allow for a variety of choices for parents looking for sound academic options. Grand Forks AFB has a unique school system.

In 1989, School District #140 was established to provide a separate district with its own school board. Educational services are contracted through the Grand Forks Public Schools District #1. Public Schools on Grand Forks AFB provide a Special Needs Preschool, a Gifted and Talented program and Head Start classes, as well as Chapter One reading services and Special Needs programs such as Speech/Language Therapy, Learning Disabilities, Occupational/Physical Therapy, and Counselors.

To contact Grand Forks Public Schools call 746-2200.

Grand Forks Air Force Base houses two schools. Carl Ben Eielson Elementary is for K-3rd grade and Twining Elementary and Middle School houses grades 4th-8th. High school students attend one of two schools in Grand Forks. The majority of students from the Air Force Base attend Grand Forks Central but open enrollment is available for those who want to attend Red River High School. Breakfast and lunch are served at all schools and programs are available for reduced meals and special needs.

Private Schools in the area include: St. Michael’s Elementary and Holy Family/St. Mary’s Elementary school in Grand Forks. Sacred Heart Elementary/High School and Riverside Christian School are located in East Grand Forks, MN.

Neighboring communities such as Emerado, Larimore, Hatton, Thompson, Midway, Manvel, and Northwood are serviced by separate school districts. Students residing in these surrounding communities may request approval for open enrollment through the Grand Forks School District.

East Grand Forks is located in Minnesota and offers two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. Students living in Minnesota must attend school in Minnesota.

Parents do have the option of choosing to home school their children. You can obtain a copy of the North Dakota Home Schooling Laws in the School Liaison office.
