Army Emergency Relief (AER) provides financial assistance in emergency situations to all active-duty Soldiers and their dependents, retired military personnel and their families, and Army National Guard and Army Reserve who have been on continuous active duty for 30 days or more. Assistance is provided on a case-by-case basis; common examples include: nonreceipt of pay and allowances, emergency transportation and vehicle repair, initial rent and deposits, threat of eviction, essential utilities, deprivation, emergency medical or dental treatments, and other emergency circumstances.
To apply for AER assistance, Soldiers need to obtain an AER application from their unit chain of command: AER form for a Commander’s Referral (active duty Soldiers only) or an AER Form 700 for all other AER assistance requests (no command signatures required for E-1 or above with 12 months active duty). Assumption of Command orders are also needed for anyone signing as the Acting Commander. Spouses will need an AER Special Power of Attorney (AER Form 53) or the Soldiers verified authorization to obtain an AER loan. All applicants must show a valid military ID card, the latest Leave and Earnings Statement, proof of a financial emergency and any additional documentation as needed.
