The Office of the Staff Judge Advocate provides two primary services for Soldiers and their Families. The first is the Army Legal Assistance Program and the second is the Army Claims Program. The Fort Carson Legal Assistance Office is available to all Soldiers, Family members and retirees. Services include preparation of wills, powers of attorney, name changes and step-child adoptions. The office also offers counseling and provides advice for individuals dealing with landlord/tenant, family law, consumer issues and military administrative matters. The office is open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Appointments are scheduled by calling on the last duty day of the week at 9 a.m. which is normally a Friday. Walk-in appointments are available starting at 9 a.m. Monday and Thursday. The Legal Assistance Office offers a divorce/separation video briefing and a general question and answer period at 9:30 a.m. Monday and Wednesday and 2 p.m. Thursday. Attorneys can provide general information about the divorce process but cannot provide in-court representation in divorce proceedings. However, a referral list of private attorneys is available. Attorneys are not available on Fridays. However, notaries and powers of attorney can be performed on a walk-in basis Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call 526-5572/5573.
The Fort Carson Staff Judge Advocate Claims Office provides assistance to anyone wishing to file a UCMJ Article 139 claim. UCMJ Article 139 provides an administrative mechanism for paying restitution to a victim of property loss or damage from the wrongdoer’s military pay. The Claims Office may also provide limited assistance with filing Personnel Claims Act (PCA) claims, which are now handled by the Army Center for Personnel Claims Support at Fort Knox, Kentucky. PCA claims include household goods moving damage claims, POV storage/shipment claims, and other incident to service losses. The Claims Office is open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to noon, and from 1 to 4 p.m. The Claims Office is closed on federal and training holidays. For more information, call 526-1355.
