5 of the Best Military Movies on Amazon Prime
There is so much content worth watching out there that it can be hard to pick what to watch first. Or second. Or at any point in your home entertainment viewings. From great films to bingeable shows, each and every streaming platform has hours of stuff to enjoy. Amazon Prime is no exception, with their great media library included in the benefits of membership. And if you’re looking for help starting your to-watch-list, here are our picks for their top military movies and series.
If you don’t think of this film whenever you hear the phrase “all-star cast,” you probably haven’t seen it. A dramatized (albeit fairly accurate) account of the disastrous Operation Market Garden conducted by the Allies in WWII, this film features greats like Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Robert Redford, Gene Hackman, James Caan, and Laurence Olivier. And that’s just to name a few. There are dozens of recognizable faces among the huge cast of this epic and entertaining war film.
Another great World War II film based on an amazing true story, this film is an undisputed classic. From the opening introductions of the clever and courageous allied POWs to the exciting chases after the titular escape, it’s a thrill from start to finish. And with a cast of greats like Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, and Charles Bronson, the quality of the acting more than matches that of the action.
Seeing the name John Wayne on a movie poster is pretty much a guarantee of some entertaining action. And this one is no exception. Sure it’s over the top, a little hokey by modern movie standards. And a fair sight short of accurate in depicting the early hours of the Battle of Iwo Jima. But it’s a rousing war yarn that never fails to entertain with Wayne in one of his finest roles: US Marine Sergeant John Stryker.
Lest you think all great war films come from the Second World War, this heart wrenching masterpiece takes place during Vietnam. Based in part on the actual wartime experiences of its writer/director, Oliver Stone, this moving flick earned eight Academy Award nominations and won four. Among them: Best Picture, and Best Director for Stone. Intense and thought provoking, it’s regarded as one of the best films about the War in Vietnam. And for a lot of good reasons.
Okay, so this is a bit of a cheat because these are two different miniseries. But they are regarded as companion pieces. And they have so much in common, to include the main production teams, we figured we could include them together. And they both definitely deserve inclusion on this list. Two true stories from the Second World War’s frontlines of Europe and across the islands of the Pacific (respectively), these HBO productions helmed by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg are nothing short of phenomenal. More than worth all of the twenty-ish hour total it takes to watch them.
With these four military movies and two 10-episode series, there’s more than enough entertainment here to fill a weekend on the couch. If you’ve made your way through all of these, or wish to expand your to-watch list, check out our recommendations on The 5 Best Military Movies on Netflix Right Now. Plus, Speilberg and Hanks are already working on another WWII miniseries, this one about bomber crews. So there’s that to look forward to in the near future as well.
