MAJ. GEN. STEPHEN L. DANNER
MISSOURI NATIONAL GUARD
Maj. Gen. Stephen Danner is the Missouri National Guard’s adjutant general. He is responsible for organizing, training and preparing a family- and community-based force of ready citizen Soldiers and Airmen to defend and serve the people of Missouri and the United States of America. He ensures the Guard abides by the responsibilities defined by the Missouri constitution, state statutes and other state-level directives. Additionally, he is responsible for the use and care of federal assets under the state’s control.
Danner enlisted in the Regular Army in 1972 and served as a combat engineer with the 8th Engineer Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division. He joined the Missouri National Guard as a member of the Judge Advocate General’s Corps in 1981 serving in the 135th Field Artillery Brigade, 70th Troop Command, 35th Engineer Brigade and Joint Force Headquarters. Maj. Gen. Danner also held several other military assignments, including deputy chief of staff, commander of the 140th Regiment (Regional Training Institute-Missouri) and assistant adjutant general-Army. He deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with the 35th Area Support Group from May 2005 to January 2007.
He was appointed by Gov. Jeremiah “Jay” Nixon and was confirmed by the Missouri State Senate as adjutant general in January 2009. He was elected chairman of the National Guard Association of the United States (NGAUS) 2012-2014. In 2015, he was appointed to the Army Reserve Forces Policy Committee in the Office of the Secretary of the Army.
