MAJOR UNITS AND ORGANIZATIONS

U.S. Army War College

The U.S. Army War College educates and develops leaders for service at the strategic level while advancing knowledge in the global application of land power. The purpose of the college is to produce graduates who are skilled critical thinkers and complex problem solvers in the global application of land power. Concurrently, it is the college’s duty to the Army to also act as a “think factory” for commanders and civilian leaders at the strategic level worldwide and routinely engage in discourse and debate on ground forces’ role in achieving national security objectives.

The college’s organizations include the Center for Strategic Leadership, Strategic Studies Institute, Peacekeeping and Stability Operations Institute, and Army Heritage and Education Center.

Center for Strategic Leadership

The Center for Strategic Leadership’s areas of emphasis are experiential education, senior leader education, support to Army senior leader research, and support to both U.S. Army War College and Army senior leader strategic communication efforts. The center’s professional staff and facility host, support, develop and conduct world-class events (workshops, symposia, conferences, games and exercises) focused on a broad range of strategic leadership and national security issues and concepts in support of the U.S. Army War College, the Army, and the interagency and joint communities.

Strategic Studies Institute

The Strategic Studies Institute is the U.S. Army’s institute for geostrategic and national security research and analysis. The institute conducts strategic research and analysis to support the U.S. Army War College curricula, provides direct analysis for Army and Department of Defense leadership, and serves as a bridge to the wider strategic community.

The institute is composed of civilian research professors, uniformed military officers and a professional support staff. All have extensive credentials and experience. SSI is divided into three components:

  • The Strategic Research and Analysis Department, which focuses on global, transregional and functional issues, particularly those dealing with Army transformation.
  • The Regional Strategy Department, which focuses on regional strategic issues.
  • The Academic Engagement Program, which creates and sustains partnerships with the global strategic community.

In addition to its organic resources, the institute has a web of partnerships with strategic analysts around the world, including the foremost thinkers in the field of security and military strategy.

Peacekeeping and Stability Operations Institute

The Peacekeeping and Stability Operations Institute promotes the collaborative development and integration of peace and stability capabilities across the U.S. government and the international community in order to enable the success of future peace and stability activities and missions. The institute is the pre-eminent trainer of U.S. forces preparing to conduct multinational peacekeeping operations. The institute and it partners also focus on collecting the key lessons learned over the last decade of war, ensuring that key peacekeeping capabilities are adequately documented so that they can be rapidly regenerated to respond to U.S. national requirements in the years to come.

The institute’s role in the U.S. Army War College is to participate actively with the college to provide the Army’s future senior leaders with the necessary knowledge and skills needed to plan, conduct and assess peace and stability operations missions and to integrate peace and stability operations doctrine, concepts and policy into Army strategy and operational missions.

Army Heritage and Education Center

The U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center makes available contemporary and historical materials related to strategic leadership, the global application of land power and U.S. Army heritage to inform research, educate an international audience and honor soldiers, past and present.
