The metropolitan region of Detroit, known as Metro Detroit, is an exciting Midwest destination in Michigan. Metro Detroit encompasses downtown Detroit, the Dearborne and Wayne County region, the Greater Novi area, and Oakland and Macomb counties. Detroit Arsenal is in Macomb County, Metro Detroit’s “East Side.” Macomb County boasts waterfront fun on Lake St. Clair, a baseball league, a performing arts center and historical gems. Downtown Detroit is only 15 miles from the arsenal, and has all the amenities you’d expect from a famous city. Check out a wide array of cultural and entertainment options including famous sports teams, museums, a zoo, parks and delicious fare from a diverse selection of up-and-coming eateries.

Belle Isle

Belle Isle is a 982-acre island state park on the Detroit River between the U.S. and Canada. The island park features athletic fields, an aquarium, a conservatory, a golf range, a nature center and more. For a full list of attractions, visit

The Belle Isle Aquarium is the oldest aquarium in the country. The aquarium features fish from the Great Lakes, Africa and South America, as well the only known collection of all seven species of gar in North America. Visit

The Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory is the oldest continually running conservatory in the U.S. The conservatory showcases everything from palms and tropical flora to cacti. Visit

The Belle Isle Nature Center lets visitors see Michigan wildlife up close. Check out an indoor honey bee hive, watch native and migratory birds via the bird observation window, then feed fallow deer and learn about their history on the isle. Visit

Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History

Founded in 1965, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit displays the history, art and achievements of African Americans. The museum’s core interactive exhibit is titled “And Still We Rise: Our Journey Through African American History and Culture.” Visit

Detroit Institute of Arts

The Detroit Institute of Arts has more than 65,000 works that date from ancient times to the present. See the first van Gogh painting to enter a U.S. museum, Diego Rivera’s Detroit Industry murals, films at the institute’s historic theater and more. Visit

Detroit Zoo

The 125-acre Detroit Zoo, in Royal Oak, has more than 2,000 animals. See anteaters, apes, penguins, zebras and other award-winning attractions. Visit

Edsel & Eleanor Ford House

This historic estate and national historic landmark was the home of Eleanor and Edsel Ford. Take a guided house tour, see the grounds and gardens, then enjoy lunch at the cafe. Visit

Lake St. Clair and the Detroit River

Recreational opportunities abound at Lake St. Clair and the riverfront. Walk, bike or jog the Detroit RiverWalk. Take a dip in the lake or Lake St. Clair Metropark’s 50-meter pool, complete with waterslides and an inflatable obstacle course. Fish for bass, walleye, pike and perch. Enjoy a par-three, 18-hole golf course or a miniature golf course on the East Boardwalk. Michigan Science Center

The Michigan Science Center in Detroit is a hands-on museum that encourages all ages to discover, explore and appreciate STEM. MiSci features theaters, a planetarium, a 9,800-square-foot exhibits hall, an area for younger children, and education and outreach programs. Visit

Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit

Experience the best in contemporary visual, literary, music and performing arts at MOCAD. Visit

PuppetART Center

The PuppetART Center includes a 70-person theater, a museum of puppets and a studio for workshops. The theater produces shows that explore a variety of cultures and feature hand, rod, shadow, floor, tabletop and string or marionette puppets. Visit
