The Strategic Army Corp Sport Parachute Team or STRAC team was formed in 1959, by 19 “Airborne” soldiers from various military units. This team was created to compete in the communist dominated sport of skydiving. On June 1, 1961, the Army officially recognized, designated and activated the team as the U.S. Army Parachute Team. A year later the team adopted its nickname, “Golden Knights.” Golden, signifying the team’s stellar reputation of bringing home gold medals from skydiving competitions. Knights, alluding to the fact that the team has “Conquered the Skies” and portraying that members of the team are champions of a set of ideals and principals. These principals are still embodied by today’s Soldiers in the U.S. Army’s “Soldier’s Creed” of mission first, never accept defeat, never quit and never leave a fallen comrade.
Each team member manifests the “Band of Excellence” as displayed by all U.S. Army Soldiers around the world. The parachute team sports an impressive competition record of 423 national championships, 66 world champs, 20 national and seven world team titles. These impressive achievements have made them not only the most successful U.S. Department of Defense sports team, but also the most successful parachute team in the world.
Annually the team performs more than 27,000 jumps before an estimated 14 million people. The team earned the title of the Army’s Goodwill Ambassadors to the world, by proving time and again that they are the best in the world. The Golden Knights have performed more than 14,000 shows in all 50 states and 48 countries. The Golden Knights assist the U.S. Army in its Strategic Outreach Program by raising the public’s awareness of “The Call to Duty” and to influence the younger generation to enlist in the U.S. Army by reaching over 20,000 people per show. Through jumping and public speaking with the target audience they direct potential applicants to the on-site Army Recruiter.
Missions of today’s Army is still the same as 230 years ago when the Army was established to serve our nation. The team is composed of seven sections: two demonstration teams, the Black and the Gold demonstration teams, two competition teams, the four-way Formation Skydiving Team, Style and Accuracy Team, Tandem section, the Aviation section, affectionately referred to as “Team Six” and a headquarters element.
