The school district operates a special needs preschool for 3-year-old, 4-year-old and non-kindergarten 5-year-old children. Children in the program may participate in motor, cognitive and language activities specifically suited to their needs. Speech, physical and occupational therapies are also available when appropriate. The school system is operated in accordance with the laws of the state of Arizona and is under the supervision of the Cochise County School superintendent.
Students are registered at the school that houses their particular grade level. General Myer Elementary School, on Smith Avenue between Arizona and Burns streets, houses all third-, fourth- and fifth-grade classes. Colonel Johnston Elementary School, on
H Avenue between Winrow Road and Smith Avenue, houses all kindergarten, first- and second-grade classes. Colonel Smith Middle School, at the intersection of Smith Avenue and Cushing Street, houses all sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade classes. High school students residing on Fort Huachuca are transported off post to attend Buena High School (520-515-2800) in the Sierra Vista School District.
SOLDIER FOR LIFE – RETIREMENT SERVICES OFFICE
The Soldier For Life – Retirement Services Office provides assistance for active-duty Soldiers, retired Army members and their families, to include widows and widowers within Arizona. The office serves as an information center and a liaison between retirees and the various agencies that serve them (such as the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Defense Finance and Accounting Service).
Serving its clientele before and after retirement, the SFL-RSO advises retired military members of their rights, benefits and privileges. The program assists active-duty Soldiers in planning a successful and smooth retirement.
All Soldiers with more than 18.5 years of active service who are considering retirement should contact the SFL-RSO office for an appointment.

SOLDIER FOR LIFE – TRANSITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
The Soldier For Life – Transition Assistance Program is mandated by the Veterans Opportunity to Work to Hire Heroes Act, Public Law 112-56, dated Nov. 21, 2011, and Army Regulation 600-81, Soldier for Life – Transition Assistance Program, dated May 17, 2016, which directed the armed services to implement the Transition Assistance Program. Army Regulation 600-81 mandates it as a commander’s program that meets the needs of separating and retiring Soldiers, Department of the Army Civilians and their family members. Participation in SFL-TAP is mandatory for all active-duty Soldiers who are separating after serving 180 days on active duty or who are retiring. Reserve-component personnel are also eligible to receive SFL-TAP services upon serving a minimum of 180 consecutive days of active duty immediately prior to separation. Individuals are encouraged to start using SFL-TAP services no later than 12 months before their separation date. SFL-TAP assists Soldiers to make critical career and transition decisions. SFL-TAP is a carefully designed program of services that inform and assist Soldiers to become familiar with the available resources needed to transition successfully into the civilian workforce and community. All separating Soldiers may begin SFL-TAP 18 months and retiring Soldiers may begin 24 months prior to but no later than 12 months from their anticipated separation or retirement date. Involuntarily separation qualifies as a rapid separation; Soldiers in this category will begin transition assistance as soon as the process begins.
Pre-separation: The transition process starts with completing the pre-separation briefing. Transitioning Soldiers will complete the mandatory DD Form 2648, Pre-separation Counseling Checklist, at work, home or in the SFL-TAP Center computer lab. To begin the pre-separation counseling online, Soldiers will go to www.sfl-tap.army.mil. Soldiers may schedule an appointment at the SFL-TAP Center by calling 520-533-5764 to complete the required DD Form 2648. Once the form is completed, Soldiers will continue the process by scheduling an individual counseling appointment at the SFL-TAP Center and receive one-on-one counseling with information about the SFL-TAP Career Readiness Standards requirements, and resources that are available to learn about career options, transition benefits and other services. Soldiers will have the opportunity to ask questions, plan their Individual Transition Plan and use the computer lab at the SFL-TAP Center, as well as schedule any additional appointments for all other services.
Workshops: Workshops cover job search skills such as resume and application development; dressing for success; interviewing skills; post-military financial planning; researching companies; networking; considering and negotiating job offers; social media skills and strategies; and guidance on searching for employment. Additional workshops are available for transitioning Soldiers interested in attending college or trade schools or starting their own business. They are encouraged to personally meet with SFL-TAP counselors to develop and hone skills learned in the workshops and to use the computer workstations for developing resumes and researching job opportunities on the internet.
Job Assistance: After completion of the workshops, Soldiers may schedule individual counseling sessions with SFL-TAP counselors. Counselors help transitioning Soldiers seeking employment by identifying an objective, writing cover letters, completing applications, finding job opportunities, preparing for interviews and attending job fairs or hiring events, and negotiating for salary and benefits.
Finance: Transitioning Soldiers will complete four to six hours of financial planning as part of the SFL-TAP five-day curriculum. A completed post-military budget is required.
Veterans Affairs: All transitioning Soldiers will complete six hours of mandatory VA Benefits Briefings I & II as part of the SFL-TAP five-day curriculum.
Capstone Process: The capstone review is conducted by an SFL-TAP counselor and each transitioning Soldier will complete the capstone process 90 days prior to their anticipated transition date and document completion of all Career Readiness Standards on the electronic DD Form 2648 (e-form). Commanders or their designees with Uniform Code of Military Justice authority will verify the Soldier has completed Career Readiness Standards requirements by digitally signing the e-form. If Soldiers have not met all Career Readiness Standards requirements, commanders or their designees through the SFL-TAP counselor will initiate and confirm that a warm handover takes place with the appropriate interagency partners. AR 600-81, Chapter 5-4 provides more specific guidance for involuntary separatees and reserve-component Soldiers.
The SFL-TAP Center is in Building 22420, in the Old Post area. Hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Thrift Shop provides an outlet for the sale and purchase of used articles that are consigned or donated by active-duty military, retired military and civilian personnel.
The Thrift Shop is in Building 90012 at the main gate. The shop is open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday for shopping and until 12:30 p.m. for consignments. It is also open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. the first Saturday of each month for shopping and until 10:30 a.m. for consignments.

THUNDER MOUNTAIN ACTIVITY CENTRE
The Thunder Mountain Activity Centre is an MWR facility that provides catering service, concessions, party rooms, and wedding and special events for all active-duty military, retired military and civilian personnel. The center also offers a Thursday lunch buffet. For more information, call 520-533-3802.
The Thunder Mountain Activity Centre is in Building 70525, Irwin Street. Business hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
The Tiny Coffeehouse is in Greely Hall, Building 61801, and is open 6:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. It is closed Saturday and Sunday.
The Sierra Vista Public Transit System is provided by the city of Sierra Vista and is a public access transportation system. Sierra Vista Public Transit serves the city of Sierra Vista as well as Fort Huachuca. Free transfers are available between the fort and the city. Bus stops on the fort include Prosser Village and the PX.
Curbside services are available for senior citizens as well as the physically or developmentally impaired. All vehicles are wheelchair-accessible. Regular fares are $1.25; military fares are $1; fares for senior citizens 65 years and older, disabled citizens and students are 75 cents; and curbside-to-curbside service is $2.

The Carlson Wagonlit Travel Office is in Building 52008 (across from the post commissary). The travel office provides reservations and ticketing services for official air travel in the continental United States. For reservations, call 520-515-0914. The fax number is 520-515-0916. Office hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. To make arrangements for OCONUS TDY, call 520-533-2798, or port calls, call 520-533-2266. The passenger service section is in Building 22332 on Augur Avenue (around the corner from the military police station).

VETERANS AFFAIRS SATELLITE OFFICE
Veterans Affairs operates a satellite office at 101 N. Coronado Drive in Sierra Vista to serve veterans in southeast Arizona and Cochise County. To make an appointment at this clinic, veterans must first call the VA Medical Center in Tucson at 800-470-8262, which will schedule your visit and ensure your medical records are available from Tucson for the local clinic. This process is necessary to ensure each veteran is scheduled to be seen by the correct clinic or medical personnel. Since the local clinic is small, some of the specialized care clinics are only available in Tucson. If needed, a shuttle service is available to transport individuals to the VA clinic.
The Veterinary Activity supports Fort Huachuca by providing food inspection and veterinary medical services for animals owned by authorized personnel. Veterinary medical services are limited by regulation but include routine vaccinations and certain classes of emergency care. For additional information or an appointment, call 520-533-2767.
