Fort Monroe is the third oldest continuously operating military installation in the United States. It is located on Old Point Comfort, the southeast tip of the Virginia Peninsula on the Chesapeake Bay. From the south, the installation neighbors the city of Hampton, the oldest continuous English speaking settlement in America. Infrastructure and location make the fort ideal for supporting Department of Defense activities, and maintaining dialogue with other commands in the Hampton Roads military complex for developing joint doctrine and tactics. While operating as an efficient and productive installation, Fort Monroe is also a national historic landmark and is committed to conveying the rich history that took place on and close to the installation. Visitors coming to the post's Casemate Museum are provided a unique opportunity to study the fort as a growing institution and one that continues to have an important mission for the Army.
