Fort Monroe is the third oldest continuously operating military installation in the United States. It is located on Old Point Comfort, the southeast tip of the Virginia Peninsula on the Chesapeake Bay. From the south, the installation neighbors the city of Hampton, the oldest continuous English speaking settlement in America. Infrastructure and location make the fort ideal for supporting Department of Defense activities, and maintaining dialogue with other commands in the Hampton Roads military complex for developing joint doctrine and tactics. The post's mission also includes preserving a historic landmark. For more than 180 years as an active Army installation, Fort Monroe has continually undergone change and growth to meet its diversified role in the defense of the nation. Functioning now as a joint force command and control installation and supported by a workforce of military and civilians totaling more than 3,300, the fort is home base for a significant number of commands and activities. These include the Army's Training and Doctrine Command; Accessions Command; Cadet Command; Installation Management Command, Northeast Region; Army Capabilities Integration Center; Army Contracting Agency-Northeast Region; Army Audit Field Office; School of Cadet Command; Joint Task Force- Civil Support; Defense Contract Management Agency; and the Naval Surface Warfare Center Detachment Norfolk. While operating as an efficient and productive installation, Fort Monroe is also a national historic landmark and is committed to conveying the rich history that took place on and close to the installation. Visitors coming to the post's Casemate Museum are provided a unique opportunity to study the fort as a growing institution and one that continues to have an important mission for the Army. Sightseers can learn about the development of the nation's defenses and military technology during the 19th century, the role of Fort Monroe during the Civil War, the history of the Coast Artillery Corps and the work conducted on Fort Monroe today. A committed, community partner, Fort Monroe is centrally located among the many historic, vacation and defense sites throughout the Hampton Roads area. The installation is a popular, community location for hosting various military activities involving all services and public leisure-time events. This plus the post's excellent facilities and programs contribute significantly to an exceptional quality of life for military and civilian workers and their families, and the public at large. As keeper of a historic treasure, Fort Monroe has maintained that historic trust while, at the same time, offering an outstanding location for the conduct of the military's business. Fort Monroe is a great place to live, work and visit.
