Welcome to Fort Riley

Fort Riley is a historic, award-winning, premier, division-level training installation. The post is home to Soldiers and families of the 1st Infantry Division, known as “The Big Red One,” which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2017. Its mission is to integrate and deliver base support to enable readiness for a globally-responsive Army. Fort Riley is a community committed to service and enhancing readiness – the foundation of the Army culture.

The 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley build and maintain combat ready forces; on order, the garrison deploys these forces in an expeditionary manner to conduct decisive action to fight and win in complex environments as members of a Joint, Inter-organizational, and Multinational team.

In 2018, the Fort Riley Garrison was one of six installations, from a field of 69, recognized as a finalist for the Army Communities of Excellence awards program. Army Installation Management Command is expected to release the ACOE results near the end of 2018.

Fort Riley is in the Central Flint Hills Region of northeastern Kansas, one hour west of Topeka, the state capital, and 2 1/2 hours west of Kansas City. The region is comprised of Clay, Dickinson, Geary, Morris, Pottawatomie, Riley, Saline and Wabaunsee counties, and boasts a variety of thriving communities, with the closest to Fort Riley being Junction City, Ogden and Manhattan. The area is primarily rural with an outstanding public school system and consortium of colleges and universities. For these reasons, the Fort Riley area and Central Flint Hills Region is considered a great place for raising children, as well as a place for military retirees and their families.

There are approximately 15,000 active-duty service members assigned to Fort Riley with more than 18,000 family members, 29,000 veterans and retirees and 5,600 civilian employees who live in the region and/or work at the post.

The 1st Infantry Division as well as approximately 25,000 additional service members assigned to National Guard and Reserve units from several states use the modern training facilities annually.
