Driving and Commuting

Lawton’s road system is well-laid out and is served mainly by Interstate 44 which connects the city to Oklahoma City and Wichita Falls. Highway 62 is also one of Lawton’s major connecting highways, with access to the towns of Altus and Anadarko.

The Oklahoma Department of Public Safety’s website offers information on road conditions, as well as procedures for vehicle registration and obtaining an Oklahoma driver’s license. Those who already have a valid driver’s license from another state may transfer their license without having to take a written or driving test. Those with an expired license from another test must take the written and driving test. Applicants must provide two forms of identification and proof of legal presence in the United States, usually a certified copy of your birth certificate and a social security card. For vehicle registration, proof of insurance must be provided. The Department of Public Safety website has an insurance verification link that can allow you to verify compulsory liability insurance requirements on your vehicle.
Lawton’s local testing site is at the Oklahoma Highway Patrol office at 705 E. Gore St. Call (580) 353-6550 for more information.
