Upon Your Arrival
All flights lead to the Honolulu International Airport, about 2 miles southeast of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam’s main gate. The airport is 9 miles west of Waikiki Beach and 4 miles west of central Honolulu. Travel time to Waikiki is about 20 to 30 minutes by car during non-rush hour traffic. Your sponsor will most likely be the one greeting you at the airport and will help you get settled into your initial accommodations. If you are not met by anyone at the airport and require lodging, you should contact your respective command duty officer or go to the USO at the airport.
The USO is located at the Honolulu International Airport. It is conveniently located on the ground level of the international terminal in the baggage claim area between baggage claims E and F.
The center’s small staff and volunteers assist military personnel and their families who transit to Hawaii. It helps travelers to manage travel-related emergencies, including contacts with military service activities, and provides a comfortable place for those awaiting flights or other transportation.
Available within the center is a TV, VCR, snack bar, limited sleeping accommodations, shower and restroom, children’s room, computers, Internet, Wi-Fi, books and magazines. Coffee and cookies from local bakeries are also available. Hours: 8 a.m. to midnight. Telephone: 808-833-2012. Email: usohawaii@uso.org.
Public Transportation
Oahu has a public transportation system, appropriately named TheBus, which should serve most of your needs if you do not have a rental vehicle. One-way fares are $2.50 for adults and $1.25 for children and high school-aged students. For more information about bus routes and schedules around the island, visit www.thebus.org, or call 808-848-5555 between 5:30 a.m. and 10 p.m. seven days a week, including holidays. The taxi fare from the airport to Waikiki will cost $33 for up to three people and $11 for each additional person. Airport Express Island Shuttles: 808-521-2121.
Rental Cars
Travel Connections also has cooperative agreements with local commercial car rental agencies. In fact, Enterprise Rent-A-Car has a rental car location on-site in the ITT Fleet Store location. Checking in Your Records
Check-in sessions with the Personnel Support Detachment are conducted by appointments only and must be arranged through your Command PASS Coordinator (CPC). In order for the CPC to schedule an appointment, a PSD Receipts Package must be completed and presented with the service record to the supervisors of the Receipts Division. After screening of the correct and complete receipts package, an appointment will be assigned to the member no sooner than 48 hours later. This time is necessary for appropriate action to make the member’s electronic file accessible.
PSD business hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. On Wednesday, PSD is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. PSD is in the Moanalua Navy Services Center Building, 4827 Bougainville Drive.
