The mission of the state’s department of health and environmental control is to improve the quality of life for all South Carolinians by protecting and promoting the health of the public and the environment. To that goal, the organization offers services provided statewide by public health professionals to assure that water is safe, children have their immunizations, restaurants are safe and birth certificates are correct — to name just a few.
The department’s main office is in Columbia, but its 3,400 employees work in 100 locations across the state. Local health clinics offer a variety of services, including immunizations, family planning, STD counseling and testing, WIC and nutrition services, women’s health services and more. Services vary by location. A listing of local health clinics in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties follows. For a full list of local health units, their hours and their available services, visit www.scdhec.gov/about-dhec/locations and click on the Health Offices map.
