The state department of health works to protect and improve the health and well-being of all New Jerseyans. It oversees all types of health facilities in the state, including hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, drug abuse treatment centers, primary care facilities, nursing homes, hospice care, assisted living, adult day care centers and more.
The department has four branches: the Office of Policy and Strategic Planning, Office of Population Health, Health Systems and Public Health Services. The department’s main office is in Trenton, with local health offices in each of the state’s 21 counties. Local health units offer many services, including communicable disease investigation and intervention, family planning, immunizations, occupational health services, STD counseling and testing, WIC and nutrition services, women’s health services and more.
