New Parent Support Program

At JBSA-Lackland, the free, voluntary New Parent Support Program helps military families expecting a child or whose child is up to 3 years old not only adapt to parenthood but thrive. Program nurses provide private, one-on-one in-home support and advice, help parents cope with the challenges of a new baby, and assist with the demands of parenting – which can become single parenting if a service member is deployed.

JBSA-Lackland’s three child development centers each offer the same activities to meet the social, emotional, cognitive and physical developmental needs of children 6 weeks to 5 years old. Enriched activities for children 3 to 5 years old include language, music, beginning reading, pre-writing, pre-math, science, nutrition, computer technology and social skills. The programs offer full-time or hourly care, depending on available space.

Be aware that although two of the three child development programs on base have slots for infants, demand is high and there is usually a waiting list.

Family Child Care

7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday

The Family Child Care program organizes care for children (from 2 weeks to 12 years old) within a home environment with a trained and licensed care provider both on base and off base, but within a 10-mile radius of JBSA-Lackland. Family Child Care offers care in special circumstances beyond traditional day care through the Expanded Child Care Program.

Exceptional Family Member Program — Family Support

The Exceptional Family Member Program provides services for families with physical, emotional, developmental or educational needs that require ongoing attention. Find assistance through Respite Care Assistance, education classes, outreach services and community support.

School Liaison

School Liaison officers at JBSA-Lackland can give military families information about the community and area education options and opportunities for their school-age children from kindergarten through 12th grade. They also can ease the transition of fresh arrivals into new schools, the departure of established young students for their next duty station and the educational situations that may come up while the family is at Lackland.

JBSA-Lackland Youth Programs

JBSA-Lackland Youth Programs include School Age Program, Youth Sports, Teen Programs, classes and First Steps for children from 3 to 5 years old. The recreational, educational and pro-social activities promote self-esteem, character development, healthy lifestyles, academic excellence, leadership and fitness.

School Age Program

The Lackland AFB School Age Program has before- and after-school care for young people from 5 to 12 years old, plus summer and holiday camps. During the school year it also offers a variety of clubs that are affiliated with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and 4-H Clubs.

Teens and Open Recreation

Preteens and teenagers can enjoy and benefit from a number of social, recreational, leadership and volunteer opportunities, such as:

  • Y.E.S. Program: High school students involved in the Y.E.S. job placement program on base can qualify for a scholarship of as much as $1,000.
  • Lackland T.R.A.I.L. Club (Training Responsible Adolescents In Leadership): Leadership club members take part in planned, supervised outdoor activities such as skiing, rock climbing, a ropes course, camping, etc.
  • Torch Club: Torch Club members 9 to 12 years old organize, elect officers and work together in four areas: service to club and community; health and fitness; education; and social recreation.
  • Titan Keystone Club: Keystone Clubs, a national program of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, are service and leadership organizations for teenagers, with the aid of an adult advisor, that focus on four areas: community service, academic success, career preparation and teen outreach. Projects include such things as organizing food and clothing drives for the homeless, or sponsoring career fairs for young people.
Youth Sports

Young people from 5 to 17 years old can participate in coached group sports such as soccer, basketball, baseball, tennis and flag football. Physicals and immunizations are required at registration and must remain current for as long as the activity lasts.

First Steps

This six-week noncompetitive instructional and developmental program gives children from ages 3 to 5 an early start in baseball, soccer and basketball; sessions last one hour. Physicals and immunizations are required at registration and must remain current for the activity’s duration.


Youth Programs offers individual and group instruction year-round in such areas as the martial arts, music, and dance and movement classes. Contact Youth Programs for current classes, their dates, availability and participation requirements.

Fit Factor

Fit Factor encourages young people to become more physically fit by suggesting at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day and teaching healthy eating habits and lifestyle choices. The program is self-paced, and each participant earns points for prizes.

Field Trips

Current members of Lackland’s Youth Programs may go on field trips that include swimming, movies, roller skating, skate boarding, game rooms, theme parks and eating out. Teens need a permission slip for all events off base.

Wills by appointment

Lackland’s legal office is part of the 37th Training Wing and provides assistance to active duty, retirees and dependents. Services include powers of attorney, wills, landlord-tenant resolutions, personal real estate matters and consumer and financial affairs such as contracts, consumer fraud or identity theft, adoption, divorce and separation, immigration and household goods issues.

Victim/Witness Assistance Program

This Commander-directed program is supported by the Staff Judge Advocate Office and provides guidance for treatment of victims and crime witnesses to ensure that they get the information and assistance they need. Special Victims Counsel

Special Victims Counsel are experienced, independent judge advocates who provide confidential legal advice to sexual assault victims. To schedule an appointment with an SVC, call 210-671-4748.

JBSA-Lackland has two pools, the indoor year-round Skylark Aquatic Center and the seasonal Warhawk Pool, which has recreational open and youth program swimming. Warhawk can be reserved for private pool parties and other special events.

The 25-meter Skylark has lap swimming, open swimming, water aerobics, swim lessons for children and adults, lifeguard training, a competitive youth swim team for ages 6 to 15 and military water training.

Auto Hobby Shop

At the Auto Hobby Shop, automotive do-it-yourselfers can take advantage of work bays, a lift, and tools such as rental mounts, benches and tire changers, and hand tools for use at no charge. Full services at competitive prices, from oil changes to diagnostic tests to rotor or drum resurfacing are available, and the Auto Hobby Shop also is an official Texas vehicle inspection station.

Skylark Bowling Center

Bowlers can enjoy 32 lanes and the latest automatic scoring technology at the renovated Skylark Bowling Center, which also features cosmic bowling, bands, bowling events and guest DJ entertainment. League and open bowlers alike are welcomed. The pro shop has top brands of balls, bags and shoes for purchase, and the center’s silver- and bronze-level certified coaches can give your game an edge. Susie’s Kitchen is open for lunch or dinner, and after a hard day’s work, Primo’s Lounge is a great place to unwind.

Lackland’s community centers are places to eat, drink and have fun. Activities include karaoke nights, dancing and tournaments, concerts and theater performances.

Arnold Hall Community Center includes an amphitheater, the Bob Hope Theater, a ballroom, conference room and Hap’s Game Room. Learn to play guitar or piano: Instructions are offered. Or sign up for theater.

Skylark Community Center primarily supports students in technical training. At the Cyber Café, students can instant message, blog, surf the web or check emails. Wi-Fi is free, and free laptops can be checked out but must stay in the center.

Frame Shop

The JBSA-Lackland Frame Shop can build many different sizes and designs of frames as well as custom flag boxes for retirements, 3-D memorabilia boxes or frames for keepsakes such as swords or guns. The Frame Shop also offers minor restoration and preservation services to maintain the quality and life of your item. Select from among more than a thousand different moldings, acid-free and specialty mats and a selection of glass. Bring in your artwork for a free quote; prices vary.

Gateway Hills Golf Course

Laid out on 200 acres with extreme elevation changes, the Gateway Hills Golf Course overlooks San Antonio. The course has a driving range, bunker, green, lob wedge practice green and two practice putting greens. Weekday tee times must be reserved seven days in advance, and weekend and holiday tee times are drawn by lottery. Private and group lessons for all skill levels are offered. On Thursdays from 4 to 7 p.m., the snack bar has Great Steak Night: a barbecue grilled steak with a salad, potato and dessert.

The JBSA Recreation Park at Canyon Lake provides outdoor recreational activities year-round. The park’s 250 acres of beautiful lakefront property with a marina offers many lodging, camping, equipment and activity options.

Outdoor Adventure Center

The Outdoor Adventure Center takes park and pavilion reservations; handles administrative paperwork for the auto resale lot, the RV storage lot, FamCamp and riding stable payments; and schedules off-base trips such as motorcycle rides, skydiving, fishing trips and zip lining. The grounds surrounding the center are laced with more than 5 kilometers of walking and running trails and include a paintball course. Saddle Club

The Saddle Club is a self-care boarding stable that offers quality accommodations and amenities for your horse at a fraction of the cost you would pay to board off base. The 24-hour facility has 46 stalls with outside runs, mare/gelding pastures, tack and feed rooms, two lighted riding arenas, a round pen, a hot walker and access to trails.
