Maxwell AFB Living Sports and Recreation

 

Whether you’re looking to take in a game or cool off with a trip down a waterslide, Montgomery County offers a variety of recreational opportunities.

City Golf Courses

The city of Montgomery operates two golf courses, Lagoon Park Golf Course and Gateway Golf Course. For a list of golf courses in the county, visit the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce Convention and Visitor Bureau’s website at www.visitingmontgomery.com.

Lagoon Park Golf Course is a par-72, 18-hole course with a traditional layout, manicured fairways and towering pine trees along with a driving range, putting green and an area for private instruction. The course can be reached at 334-240-4050.

Gateway Golf Course at 3800 Davenport Parkway is a nine-hole course and a golf learning center with a driving range, putting green and an area for private instruction. Six target greens and a large chipping green are great for working on short- and long-range shots. An indoor practice area uses up-to-date video teaching technology, helping students learn the game at least four times faster. Gateway Golf Course can be reached at 334-284-7920.

Coosa River Adventures

Enjoy whitewater rafting, kayak fishing or a relaxing canoe trip with Coosa River Adventures, which rents and sells water recreational gear, canoes, kayaks, paddleboards and more. The 7-mile Coosa River trips average three to four hours, and highlights include rapids at the River Falls, Moccasin Gap rock island, a swimming hole and varying levels of river flows. The 90,000-square-foot Cramton Bowl Multiplex is a new indoor sports facility with volleyball courts, basketball courts, soccer fields, tennis courts and wrestling areas adjacent to the Cramton Bowl. Call for hours.

Montgomery’s newest shooting facility, the Lower Wetumpka Shotgun Sports Club can help beginners and professionals alike with their skeet shooting needs. Montgomery Zoo

Stretching over more than 40 acres, the Montgomery Zoo displays animals from around the world, including Africa, Australia, Asia and South America. More than 500 animals are housed in natural, barrier-free habitats. Stand nose-to-nose with a giraffe, feed river otters, ride the miniature train, take a pedal boat ride or soar aloft in the Zoofari Skylift. Don’t forget to visit the Mann Wildlife Learning Museum, which features touch-and-feel displays, animal habitats, fossils and mounted fish including stingrays, sharks and even a killer whale.
