Cpl. Brady Benjamin, a Military working dog handler aboard Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, and Sgt. Kevin Fisch, an automotive maintenance technician on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, started their Marine Corps journey together in recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego in 2017.
They meet again as rivals at this year’s High Intensity Tactical Training Championship aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, Sept. 9-12, 2019. Both will undertake many challenges, but only one may become the ultimate HITT athlete.
“I miss competing, it’s nice to go back and do this stuff,” said Fisch, who also competed on America Ninja Warrior earlier this year.
The two contenders were both college athletes before the Marine Corps and are participating because they miss the competition, athleticism, and training.
“You had that competition, you have those people around trying to push you,” said Benjamin, of Guthrie, Oklahoma.
Fisch and Benjamin give credit for their success to numerous people within their commands. Fisch states that he gives credit to Benjamin.
“Cpl. Benjamin, this motivator right here, pushed me through boot camp and obviously one thing led to another and now we are competing against each other,” said Fisch, a native of Lockeport, Illinois.
Both Marines have similar goals for the competition. They would like to see fitness standards changed, and physical training evolved. Benjamin joked, “Give Fisch a run for his money.”
Top athletes across the Marine Corps compete in many obstacles and exercises in the annual championship to be crowned the HITT champion. Fisch hopes to defend his 2018 title as HITT champion, while improving the readiness, knowledge, and physical standards of the Marine Corps.
