Mountain Home AFB Getting To and Around in Southwest Idaho


Southwest Idaho links easily to the nearby states of Oregon, Utah and Nevada, and is easily accessible via several highways. Most people traveling in the Elmore County area choose to drive, enjoying the scenic vistas through the Danskin, Soldier and Trinity mountains.

For those flying, there is one major airport within 50 or so miles with numerous air carriers. Elmore County has public transportation, and the area is also served by a Greyhound station.


Boise Airport

Boise Airport is approximately 50 miles from Mountain Home Air Force Base and is Idaho’s largest commercial airport, serving more than 3.25 million travelers in 2016. Major carriers include Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, Allegiant Airlines and United Airlines.

Ground transportation includes bus, taxi, shuttle and rental car service. Rental car agencies are on the first floor, and there are eight companies to choose from. There is limited shuttle service from the airport to Mountain Home AFB. Contact Mountain Home Shuttle Service at 208-580-1887 for transportation.


Amtrak Bus Station

Boise has not had passenger trains since 1997, but Amtrak offers connecting bus service in a building shared with the Greyhound bus station. For information on routes and fares, visit or call customer service at 800-872-7245.

Mountain Home Community Transit

Treasure Valley Transit operates Mountain Home Community Transit and provides service within the base and to the surrounding areas. The base route operates from 6 to 9 a.m. and 2 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. The city route operates from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. The bus does not run on select holidays. Greyhound provides bus service between several points in Idaho and across the United States. In Mountain Home, the bus line has a passenger stop. Call for hours of operation and ticketing schedules, or book online.
