Driving and Commuting
One interstate, one U.S. route and several state routes cross Kings and Fresno counties.
In Kings County, State Route 41 runs north to south, linking Lemoore to Stratford and Kettleman City (where it intersects with Interstate 5). Following State Route 41 north takes you into Fresno County and the City of Fresno itself. State Route 198 runs east to west and links Lemoore and Hanford. State Route 43 bisects State Route 198 in Hanford, running north to south, eventually linking up with Selma in Fresno County. State Route 33 runs through Avenal in the western portion of the county.
Fresno County is intersected by I-5 and U.S. Route 99, along with several state routes. State Route 198 runs east to west, connecting travelers to NAS Lemoore in Kings County. U.S. Route 99 and state routes 41, 168 and 180 all converge in the City of Fresno. State Route 168 connects Fresno with Clovis. U.S. Route 99 connects Fresno with Selma.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles issues driver’s licenses, identification cards and vehicle registration and provides other driving-related services. Find many of the required forms as well as general information at the DMV’s website.
Military personnel and their spouses who are stationed in California from elsewhere may continue to drive with a valid driver’s license from their home state, but in general, all California residents who want to drive must apply for a driver’s license once residency is established.

The state of California prohibits drivers from making calls or texting on hand-held wireless telephones while operating a motor vehicle. Motorists must use hands-free devices to make and receive all calls. Drivers under 18 are prohibited from using hands-free devices while operating a motor vehicle.
