The F/A-18 training facility is the home for all of the Navy’s F/A-18E/F/C training devices, more commonly known as simulators. There are currently eight F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and four F/A-18C Legacy Hornet simulators in operation in Building 43. However, in October 2013 the FRS will no longer be training C-model students and only support to fleet squadrons will be provided. In addition to training devices, Building 43 encompasses computer-aided training stations, classrooms and training courseware development offices in support of student training and fleet squadron aviators.
The first training device installed in Building 43 was the Weapons Task Trainer, serial No. 001, built by Hughes Aircraft Company. Hughes installed the trainer in 1983 and provided Contractor Logistic Support (CLS) for the first year.
They are currently L-3 Communications Link Simulation & Training. However you slice up the name, the current organization providing COMS support on the F/A-18 training devices in Building 43 can trace their roots back to that first trainer installed in 1983.
The future for the training device industry is flourishing and much is on the horizon with the development and introduction of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.
