History

Growing

For 70 years the Navy has had a strong presence in Ventura County, starting with the onset of WWII. The Seabee Mobilization Base was established in Port Hueneme in 1942, followed by the Point Mugu Test Range and Air Facility in 1946. Since then, the missions have grown and the functions have changed making NBVC one of the most comprehensive installations in the U.S. Navy. That tradition of growth continues as the unique assets at NBVC draw new and emerging technologies to Ventura County.

Stewardship

Naval Base Ventura County has a dedicated, award-winning environmental program. Our Environmental Division successfully manages significant natural and cultural resources while supporting defense operations, balancing the needs of the government with the responsibility to care for the environment. NBVC’s unique geography presents challenges, but also opportunities to make great strides in conversation and stewardship efforts. The largest coastal wetland in southern California lies within NBVC Point Mugu. At 2,500 acres, it provides refuge for a variety of sensitive, wetland-dependent flora and fauna.

DOD Economic Impact

NBVC is a vital part of the Ventura County economy.  As the largest employer in the county, roughly 5 percent of employed adults in Ventura County work at or for NBVC. Our $1.9 billion economic impact includes $1.2 billion in indirect and induced value of goods and services, $711.1 million in salaries, $75.5 million in state and local tax revenue and $1.04 million in aid to schools. As such integral partners in the community, it is NBVC’s responsibility to actively pursue partnerships and relationships with our neighbors outside the fence.

Maritime Strategy

Positioned strategically at the entrance to the San Diego Bay, Naval Base Point Loma provides shore service, support, facilities, and housing for Submarine Squadron ELEVEN (CSS 11), Naval Mine and Anti-Submarine Warfare Command, 3rd Fleet, and SPAWAR.
