CNIC Awarded for CFC’s Most Outstanding Campaign in National Capital Area

WASHINGTON– The Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) National Capital Area’s (NCA) Most Outstanding Campaign Award was presented to Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) by the Under Secretary of the Navy Thomas B. Modly inside the Pentagon’s Hall of Heroes at Arlington, Va., March 6.

CNIC was selected among all Navy and Marine Corps commands located in the Washington, D.C area to include Maryland, Quantico, Va. and Dahlgren, Va. based on leadership involvement, special events and motivation.

“This award recognizes an organization that believes in reaching out to help others,” said retired Lt. Cmdr. Keith Barber, CNIC port operations analyst and the command’s CFC co-chairman. “For me, CNIC richly deserved recognition as the most outstanding command’ for a lot of reasons all of us here at CNIC HQ are well aware of, but receiving recognition from naval leadership outside our life lines is a very great honor.”

Retired Rear Adm. Tim Alexander, CNIC director of operations, Aisha Holmes, CNIC information technology supervisor, and Barber accepted the award on behalf of the shore enterprise headquarters team.
The command’s other CFC co-chairman Lt. Cmdr. James Sandifer was selected as a CFCNCA Hero of the Year, an annual recognition awarded to a military member displaying exceptional commitment to the CFCNCA activities and dedicated service to community-wide volunteerism.

“Leaders are examples, not exceptions,” said Sandifer, who volunteered to lead CNIC’s CFC campaign and pursues a master’s degree in life-coaching. “You should always reach back and help someone else.”

Navy Installations Command met its contact goal of 100 percent early in the season with the help of more than 15 employees taking active roles. The command reached 113 percent of its donation target by raising $45,422.

“It was a tremendous group effort,” Sandifer added. “Without them, it (CNIC’S CFC campaign) would be a failure.”

Barber witnessed first-hand the difference CFC makes in peoples’ lives around 1995. He recalled volunteering for the program at his last active duty command, Submarine Group 10, assisting a CFC program, “meals on wheels,” when a Georgian woman expressed to him the impact it had on her day-to-day life.

The CNIC CFC team presented four to six charity representatives during several awareness events such as a chili cook-off, caroling during the holiday season, a pastry baking contest and a coffee bar throughout the campaign season.

CNIC collected pledges and donations from Sept. 10, 2018 through Jan. 10, 2019. Donations can be made to any number of the more than 4,000 charities.

Other CNIC members who contributed to the CFC campaign success were: Capt. Stephen Barnett, Rosemary Bell, Lt. Daniel Eldred, Jack Davis, Nyeika Hollien, Alba Gonzalez, Wakia Horton, Thomas Johnson, Megan LeDell, Lt. Coulter Lindeke-Heavenrich, Penny Lumley, Michael Pope, Dan Tope, Curtis Webber and Dr. Lorenzo York.

The CFC is the world’s largest charity campaign and raises millions each year for non-profit organizations.

Navy Installations Command is comprised of approximately 53,000 military and civilian personnel worldwide responsible for the operations, maintenance and quality-of-life programs to support the Navy’s fleet, Sailors and their families.
