HOUSING

By MyBaseGuide Staff Member
When engineers here looked at the heavy M249 carried by soldiers, they decided to put it on a diet and rearrange some of the components, Kori Phillips said. She said when her team was finished, the M249, formerly known as the squad automatic weapon, went from 17.5 to 9.2 pounds. That is only about 2 pounds heavier than the M16A2 rifle. The M249 light machine gun also took on a longer name. It is now called the cased telescoped light machine gun, or CT LMG. Phillips is a project engineer with the Joint Service Small Arms Program. Military Family Housing

Military family housing at Picatinny Arsenal is provided by Balfour Beatty Communities. Picatinny Homes consist of five neighborhoods with three- to six-bedroom houses in both single-family and townhome styles. Homes in these neighborhoods feature garages, central air conditioning, washer and dryer hookups, fully equipped kitchens, porches and fenced in yards; amenities vary by neighborhood. Other community amenities include playgrounds, tot lots and community events. Lawn care services, 24-hour maintenance services, and curbside trash and recycling pickup are provided. Utilities are included in your rent — though residents who consume more than the baseline utility consumption have to pay for overages, while residents who consume less than the baseline receive rebates. Picatinny Homes allows pets with certain restrictions. In general, residents may have two pets, though certain dog breeds and exotic animals are not allowed. Pets must be registered with the Community Management Office by completing the pet addendum. If additional pets are acquired after move-in, residents must update the pet addendum within three days.
