Redstone Arsenal Community
As the “Economic Engine” of the Tennessee Valley, Redstone Arsenal and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center are the region’s No. 1 and No. 2 employer, respectively. Together, a workforce of more than 37,500 is employed “behind the gates” of Redstone Arsenal. Additionally, given the nature of life cycle-management over various weapon and space systems, RDT&E, and acquisition programs, there is an enormous impact on local businesses and communities.
DoD’s Office of Economic Adjustment commissioned a study conducted by the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Natalie P. Voorhees Center that was released in early 2012. After analyzing the total economic impact of Redstone Arsenal and its activities, the 2013 total economic impact for all direct, indirect and induced activities is estimated at $12.7 billion annually. This is equivalent to nearly 7% of the entire State of Alabama’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In addition to more than 37,500 direct jobs located on Redstone Arsenal, 66,500 indirect and induced jobs are created across the region for a combined total of 104,000 jobs attributed to the Arsenal.
