Madison and Morgan Counties
Madison and Morgan Counties link easily to other parts of Alabama and to neighboring Tennessee, Mississippi and Georgia via major highways. Music City USA, Nashville, Tennessee, is only 100 miles to the north, on Interstate 65, and Atlanta is 185 miles to the southeast, on U.S. Highway 72 and I-75.
For those flying, there are four major airports within 200 or so miles — two in Alabama and two in Tennessee — with numerous air carriers.
Both counties have public transportation, and the area is also served by a Greyhound Bus Station.

Huntsville International Airport is about 11 miles from Redstone Arsenal and is the largest commercial airport in northern Alabama, serving more than 1.2 million passengers annually. It provides nonstop service to Atlanta; Charlotte, North Carolina; Chicago; Dallas; Houston; Denver; and Washington, D.C. The airport’s major passenger carriers include American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United.
Ground transportation includes bus, taxi, shuttle, limo and rental car service. Rental car counters and other ground transportation options are on the first floor in the baggage claim area. The airport is served by six rental car companies.

Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport is about 78 miles from Redstone Arsenal, serving just under 2.7 million passengers annually. The airport is served by American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines and United.

Nashville International Airport is 121 miles from Redstone Arsenal. Serving more than 11.6 million passengers annually, Nashville International is one of the fastest growing airports in the country. It is served by Air Canada, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, Southwest Airlines, United, Alaska Airlines, Contour Airlines, JetBlue and WestJet.

Memphis International Airport is 190 miles from Redstone Arsenal. Major airlines include American Airlines, Frontier Airlines, United, Delta Airlines and Southwest Airlines.

To get to the Ground Transportation Center, where rental car services are located, start in Terminal B and go one level below baggage claim to the lowest level, using an escalator or elevator. Follow signs that read Economy Parking/Rental Cars.

Huntsville Shuttle Bus System

Huntsville’s shuttle bus system provides service on nine routes within Huntsville from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday; a free downtown route from 5 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday connects city attractions, motels and restaurants. Guides on Saturday Breakfast Trolley Tours revisit city history with runs from Alabama Constitution Village through downtown Huntsville and the Twickenham Historic District. The system also serves handicapped passengers.

Driving and Commuting
Madison and Morgan counties are traversed by two U.S. highways and various state routes.
Interstate 565 is a 22-mile interstate spur that connects I-65 in Decatur with U.S. Route 72 in Huntsville. I-565 serves the cities of Decatur, Madison and Huntsville and also provides the route to Redstone Arsenal as well as Huntsville International Airport.
Within Madison County, U.S. 231 pairs with unsigned State Route 53 from Huntsville to the southeastern corner of Alabama and pairs with U.S. 431 north to Tennessee.
Within Morgan County, I-65 meanders across 367 miles of the Alabama countryside joining six of the state’s 10 largest cities. The highway links many important roadways that make commerce inside and outside the state’s boundaries possible. It starts at Interstate 10 near Mobile. The route passes through the major cities of Montgomery, Birmingham and Decatur before crossing into Tennessee near the town of Ardmore.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Driver License Division issues driver’s licenses, identification cards and vehicle registration and provides other driving-related services. Find general information at www.alea.gov/dps/driver-license.
Military personnel and their spouses who are stationed in Alabama from elsewhere may continue to drive with a valid driver’s license from their home state. They are not required to obtain an Alabama driver’s license while stationed in Alabama, even if their assignment in Alabama may be of long duration.

Except for novice drivers, Alabama does not prohibit drivers from making calls on handheld wireless telephones while operating a motor vehicle. However, because localities are allowed to enact their own cellphone laws, making or receiving calls without a hands-free device may be illegal in some towns. Texting while driving is prohibited in Alabama.
