The education and training centers provide counseling services on military academic planning, community colleges, tuition assistance, the GI Bill, commissioning programs, certifications, military correspondence courses, vocational training, veteran’s educational benefits, testing, professional military education and foreign languages. A test center offers CLEP and DSST exams for college credit and also proctors exams from other universities for a fee.

Service members can take courses and meet with representatives from several colleges and universities at JBSA, including Alamo Colleges, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Park University, Wayland Baptist University and Webster University. There are several degree plans service members can enroll in at the schools that are based at the education centers, including associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

The Child Development Program’s mission is to support the morale and welfare of service members by offering comprehensive programs that improve and enhance their children’s well being. The program offers developmentally age appropriate programs for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years.

The Family Child Care program organizes care for children 2 weeks to 12 years of age within a home environment with a licensed care provider on base or within a 10-mile radius of each installation. The program offers unique care in special circumstances beyond traditional day care through the Expanded Child Care Program.

JBSA Military & Family Readiness Centers incorporate Airman & Family Readiness, Army Community Service and Fleet & Family Support, providing a full range of programs and services to support mission readiness. The centers link service members and their families with the right resources to meet their specific needs on JBSA or within the local community.

Centers offer a variety of trainings, workshops and one-on-one consultations to supports individuals, families and leadership with programs that strengthen the communities, encourage self-sufficiency, enhance mission readiness and resiliency, and ease adaptation to the military way of life.

Services include financial readiness and assistance, casualty assistance, employment assistance, the Exceptional Family Member Program, information and referral, lending closets, military and family life counselors, mobilization and deployment readiness, relocation readiness, the school liaison office, transition assistance, volunteer resources, voting assistance and much more. The New Parent Support Program is a free, voluntary program to help military families with young children adapt to parenthood and thrive as healthy families. Program benefits are available to active-duty military families who are expecting a child or who have a child up to age 3.

Private, in-home support for new parents is the main focus of the program. The program is staffed with nurses who can provide one-on-one support and guidance for expecting and new parents. The program also helps parents cope with the challenges of having a new baby and manage the demands of parenting when a service member is deployed. The program includes access to parenting books, booklets, DVDs and other materials.

School liaison officers help parents ease the transitions of the mobile military lifestyle for their children before a PCS, upon arrival, while at an installation and when preparing to leave for the next duty station. School liaison officers have current information about the local school systems and community and link military families with surrounding school districts, ensuring that military children have the best possible educational opportunities for academic success.

JBSA legal offices provide legal assistance to active-duty military members, reserve and Guard members on active duty, retired military members and dependents of the aforementioned groups. Legal assistance is provided for powers of attorney and in the areas of estate planning, finance, family law, immigration, taxation, voting and more. Legal assistance does not extend to advice about criminal charges or adverse administrative actions. Contact the Area Defense Counsel for assistance with those matters.

The office also operates a free tax clinic from early January to mid-April, preparing and filing federal and state tax returns for eligible persons.

The JBSA Recreation Park at Canyon Lake provides outdoor recreational activities year-round. The park’s 250 acres of beautiful lakefront property with a marina offer many lodging, camping, and equipment and activity options. Reservations for lodging units, RV spaces and pavilions can be made 6 mont hs in advance by active-duty personnel. All other DOD cardholders may make reservations 3 months in advance.
