2021 MLB Baseball Opening Day, Military TV & In-Person Game Discounts

Introduction

Take me out to the baaaaall game!!! Or at least let me watch America’s pastime while protecting the health and safety of myself and others during the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic!

It’s no secret that, even with abbreviated seasons, professional sports gave so many of us something to pass the (seemingly endless) time during the 2020 quarantine. They’re also giving us something to eagerly look forward to this year. Thankfully, one rite of spring is returning right on time as our hopes for a healthier summer start to bloom. Major League Baseball kicks off its full 2021 season with Opening Day on April 1 (no foolin’!).

With so many folks eager to return to regular activities — you know, like shelling peanuts, biting down on a stadium dog and catching a fly ball in your beverage cup — the league is eager to invite fans back to experience games in person. Depending on local health regulations, you can expect special protocols to protect you, the players and everyone it takes to make a great game-day experience. The best way to stay current on COVID safety precautions is to visit each team’s website (which we’ve conveniently linked to below). The whole league is doing its part to keep everyone healthy, and you should too.

Keep checking the White Sox website for updated info about theme nights and Hero of the Game opportunities.

Cleveland Indians

7. Cleveland Indians
Progressive Field
2401 Ontario St.
Cleveland, OH 44115
Phone: 1 (216) 420-4487

How could you not love a franchise that holds both the longest winning streak in the American League AND the longest World Series drought among current MLB teams? Not to mention some of the wackiest hot dog selections in the entire league (which you can eat while watching the team’s famous Hot Dog Derby). The team offers a military discount of up to 20 percent off tickets through its website, but sales are limited to month-by-month availability due to the uncertainty of COVID. Check the Indians’ official site for updated theme promotions nights throughout the season.

Detroit Tigers

8. Detroit Tigers
Comerica Park
2100 Woodward Ave.
Detroit, MI 48201
Phone: 1 (313) 962-4000

Established in 1894(!), the Tigers are the oldest continuous one-name, one-city franchise in the American League. Lately, they might be in what you call a “rebuilding phase.” No matter, we’re still gonna yell “Who’s Your Tiger?” The team is proud to honor active and former military with discounted tickets, special Game Ball Delivery opportunities, and Armed Forces and Veteran Recognition days. While the team has giveaways and special events on hold, you can check their web page for updates.

9. Kansas City Royals
Kaufman Stadium
1 Royal Way
Kansas City, MO 64129
Phone: 1 (816) 921-8000

Sure, it has some damn fine barbecue, but Kansas City is also home to 2015 World Series champs! Maybe you didn’t know that one of the city’s finest landmarks is The National WWI Museum and Memorial, offering an educational understanding of the Great War and spectacular views of downtown. The KC Royals pay tribute to the military through its Salute to Service seating program and ticket discounts. Watch the team’s promotions web page for other special deals from the Boys in Blue.

Check the team’s promotions schedule as it updates throughout the season.

West

Houston Astros

11. Houston Astros
Minute Maid Park
501 Crawford St.
Houston, TX 77002
Phone: 1 (713) 259-8000

These champions of the 2017 World Series draw their name from NASA’s nearby Johnson Space Center. Plus, the team’s green mascot, Orbit, is just like us — we love “Star Wars” and Moon Pies, too! Back on earth, every home game the ’Stros honor an active-duty member or veteran through its Operation Military Appreciation program, where nominees can receive complimentary tickets behind home plate. But you don’t have to win that honor to score discounted tickets online. Watch the Astros’ promotion schedule for additional special events.

12. Los Angeles Angels
Angel Stadium
2000 E Gene Autry Way
Anaheim, CA 92806
Phone: 1 (714) 940-2000

The LA Angels have only won one World Series (2002), but their popularity is undeniable. Is it because “The Big A” stadium in Orange County features a running waterfall over rocks that shoot fireworks whenever an Angel hits a homerun? Is it the strange power of the team’s Rally Monkey, inspired by “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective”? Who knows! We do know that the team offers discount military tickets in cooperation with GovX. Refresh the team’s promotional schedule throughout the season for additional special events. We hope you’ll be there to see them light up the stadium’s landmark A after a fun win.

13. Oakland Athletics
RingCentral Coliseum
7000 Coliseum Way
Oakland, CA 94621
Phone: 1 (510) 569-2121

It’s hard to deny the historic talent of the A’s, a team that was founded in 1901 and counts nine World Series wins to its name. Despite their popularity, you won’t need to play “Moneyball” to get a good deal on a limited budget. The Green and Gold offers discount military tickets in cooperation with GovX. Hit that refresh button throughout the season to see updates from the team’s promotions and special events schedule.

Seattle Mariners

14. Seattle Mariners
T-Mobile Park
1250 1st Ave. S.
Seattle, WA 98134
Phone: 1 (206) 346-4000

We have nothing but affection for the M’s, maybe because of, not despite them having the longest playoff drought in all of the four major North American professional sports. Just go and cheer them on! Not sure about singing along during the seventh-inning stretch? No worries, you can mumble to the Kingsmen’s famous “Louie, Louie,” traditionally played after “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” The team honors those in active duty and veterans with its Salute to Those Who Serve program, ticket discounts and the chance to hold re-enlistments at the stadium. Navigate back to the Mariner’s special events page for updated promotions throughout the season.

15. Texas Rangers
Globe Life Field
734 Stadium Drive
Arlington, TX 76011
Phone: 1 (817) 533-1972

Excuse us while we briefly daydream about Air Force veteran Chuck Norris hitting a grand slam for the team with the name inspired by the famous law enforcers. Nice. Where were we? Oh yes, click the team’s special events schedule throughout the season for Texas-sized promotions. And shoot, the Rangers also offer discount military tickets in a partnership with GovX.

National League

East

Atlanta Braves

16. Atlanta Braves
Truist Park
755 Battery Ave SE
Atlanta, GA 30339
Phone: 1 (404) 577-9100

What could be more American than being known as “America’s Team”? Maybe their red, white and blue uniforms? Or the fact that, despite some name changes, the team has dubbed itself “the oldest continuously operating professional sports franchise in America.” Founded originally in Boston in 1871, the Braves today show their appreciation for our military by offering a 33 percent discount on select home-game seats during the 2021 season in a partnership with GovX. Check the team’s promotions web page for more special events.

17. Miami Marlins
Marlins Park
501 Marlins Way
Miami, FL 33125
Phone: 1 (305) 480-1300

Go wild for The Fish, aka the Marlins, aka the first team to win the World Series as a wild card. We’re excited to see where now-Marlins president Derek Jeter and General Manager Kim Ng take the team in 2021. On select games, the Marlins offer 10 percent discounts to active and retired military. Check the team’s GovX partnership page for eligibility and availability. Info about special promotions nights can be found here.

New York Mets

18. New York Mets
Citi Field
41 Seaver Way
Queens, NY 11368
Phone: 1 (718) 507-8499

Hey, military members, meet the Mets! This “miracle” team is known for its 1969 post-season, pulling out one of the biggest World Series upsets in history — sorry, Orioles fans. As you might expect, the team has an extensive program to honor the military and first responders. Check out some of the details of their appreciation efforts then grab a discounted ticket through GovX.

19. Philadelphia Phillies
Citizens Bank Park
1 Citizens Bank Way
Philadelphia, PA 19148
Phone: 1 (215) 463-1000

We’re big phans of the Phillies, the oldest continuous same-name, same-city franchise in American professional sports. Maybe we’re a little too much endeared to the team’s mascot, the Phillie Phanatic. I mean, how can you not phall for that big, green snoot? Throughout the year, the Phillies have supported our men and women in uniform by donating thousands of tickets to members of the military, veterans and their families. Check out the discounted offerings available at GovX.

20. Washington Nationals
Nationals Park
1500 S Capitol St SE
Washington, DC 20003
Phone: 1 (202) 675-6287

Get ready to show some Natitude for the Nats! This winner of the 2019 World Series is one of the most patriotic teams we can think of, with many programs benefiting our military in our nation’s capital. From the Nats on Base program to military appreciation days and ticket giveaways, the team promotes a whole host of military initiatives. Find discounted tickets through the partnership with GovX. Then check back with the team’s promotion schedule as the season progresses.

Central

Chicago Cubs

21. Chicago Cubs
Wrigley Field
1060 W Addison St.
Chicago, IL 60613
Phone: 1 (773) 404-2827

Cubbies!!! We gotta give major props to the team that took home the 2016 World Series win after their last overall league championship in (checks notes) 1908! With the charming history of Wrigley Field, the legacy of announcer Harry Caray and the new tradition of the W and L flags, there’s much lore to love about this franchise. Looks like the team is moving a little safe and slow with its promotional schedule, but updates can be found online here throughout the year. Then check the GovX Cubs page for the availability of discounted military tickets.

22. Cincinnati Reds
Great American Ball Park
100 Joe Nuxhall Way
Cincinnati, OH 45202
Phone: 1 (513) 381-7337

With a rich history dating to 1882, the Reds are one of the best-known and beloved teams in the league, with a World Series title for every finger on one hand. But they’re also known for lending a helping hand to those in their community. In a remarkable fundraiser during the 2020 pandemic, fans could purchase cutouts of themselves to be placed in the stands, raising more than $300,000 for community assistance. Another way the Big Red Machine gives back is with discounted tickets to the military in cooperation with GovX. See the team’s promotions and giveaways schedule for more incentives.

 Milwaukee Brewers

23. Milwaukee Brewers
American Family Field
1 Brewers Way
Milwaukee, WI 53214
Phone: 1 (414) 902-4452

You know, winning a World Series sometimes isn’t the most important thing to a baseball fan. Sometimes it’s drinking something cold at the sunny game of a team named for its home city’s proliferation of breweries. Cheers to the Brewers, who offer active-duty military and veterans half-price tickets in select locations for some game through the ID.me program. Check the team’s discount page for updates as the season develops. Extra promotions can be found on the schedule here.

24. Pittsburgh Pirates
PNC Park
115 Federal St
Pittsburgh, PA 15212
Phone: 1 (412) 321-2827

Let’s Go, Bucks! Wear your black and yellow, black and yellow to cheer on this team with five World Series in its treasure trove. The Pirates pride themselves in the many ways they support more than 260,000 veterans and their families in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Among the appreciation events are Military Wednesdays, homecoming surprises, a special Fourth of July celebration and much more. Check the promotions schedule for updates, the team’s ticket web page and the GovX program for more discounts.

St. Louis Cardinals

25. St. Louis Cardinals
Busch Stadium
700 Clark Ave.
St. Louis, MO 63102
Phone: 1 (314) 345-9600

Second only to the Yankees in the number of World Series titles, the Cards would need both hands and one extra finger for all their championship rings! This incredibly successful and popular team has hosted military appreciation games in the past, so check the website for those games as they are announced this season. Find the team’s schedule for promotions and giveaways here, then look for discounted tickets at GovX.

West

26. Arizona Diamondbacks
Chase Field
401 E Jefferson St.
Phoenix, AZ 85004
Phone: 1 (602) 514-8400

The Grand Canyon State is not just for spring training, OK? Hatched for the 1998 season, the Arizona Diamondbacks needed only four seasons to capture the 2001 World Series title, defeating the Yankees in what was the fastest time to a championship for an expansion team. Today, the franchise is pleased to support the military through a wide range of initiatives, including discounted tickets, the Hits for Heroes program, resources for the USO and many, many more partnerships. Check the D-backs promotional schedule for additional incentives.

27. Colorado Rockies
Coors Field
2001 Blake St.
Denver, CO 80205
Phone: 1 (303) 292-0200

The Rockies qualifying for the postseason five times, each time as a Wild Card winner, is nothing to sniff at. But we think those fastballs must be feeling a little “Rocky Mountain High” as this stadium is known for being a “hitter’s park.” The team highlights active-duty military and veterans in programs such as the Hero of the Game, appreciation days and more. Find discount tickets at GovX and a schedule of promotion events here.

Los Angeles Dodgers

28. Los Angeles Dodgers
Dodger Stadium
1000 Vin Scully Ave.
Los Angeles, CA 90012
Phone: 1 (866) 363-4377

Your 2020 World Series champs are ready to defend their title! One of the most popular teams in MLB, the Dodgers have an unparalleled history, boasting players such as Sandy Koufax, Orel Hershiser, Kirk Gibson, Don Sutton, Roy Campanella and, of course, the groundbreaking Jackie Robinson, whose number 42 was retired throughout the entire league in 1997. The team provides a full range of military appreciation programs, including a Military Hero of the Game, veterans batting practice and ticket discounts. Check Los Doyers’ special events calendar for more promotions as they are added.

29. San Diego Padres
Petco Park
100 Park Blvd.
San Diego, CA 92101
Phone: 1 (619) 795-5555

Forgive us, Padres, if we’re surprisingly hopeful for the 2021 season! Playing in one of America’s Finest Cities for military appreciation, the Padres have one of the most extensive discount programs in the league, even earning them a Team of the Military nickname. From salutes to re-enlistments to appreciation dates and even a military-themed jersey, San Diego is about as military friendly as you can get. Currently, military discounts are only available at GovX, but refresh their promotions page for updated special events, such as appreciation days for each branch.

San Francisco Giants

30. San Francisco Giants
Oracle Park
24 Willie Mays Plaza
San Francisco, CA 94107
Phone: 1 (415) 972-2000

With more than 63 players in the National Baseball Hall of Fame, more than any other team, we’d say this team is literally one of the giants of American sport. Their eight World Series titles are the second-most in the National League and fifth-most of any franchise. Heck, this popular team has such a fun but fierce rivalry with the Dodgers that it survived the relocation of both teams from New York to California! Check the team’s partnership with GovX for updates on military ticket discounts. Find additional promotions and giveaways as they’re added throughout the season.

MLB TV Military Discount

MLB.TV has partnered with GovX to offer active-duty and national guard military members, veterans and dependents a 35 percent discount for the 2021 season. You can choose the MLB.TV yearly subscription which includes all teams or a yearly single team subscription.

For the full list of qualifications, you can visit the GovX website.

Military Veterans in the Game

That’s right, we’re taking this article into extra innings to salute some of the most famous military veterans who were also in the U.S. armed forces. Check out this list of veterans who are in the baseball hall of fame courtesy of the Baseball Hall of Fame, of our heroes in sports and in military service.
