MOS MILITARY JOBS AND CAREERS FOR THE ARMED FORCES

By Buddy Blouin
The military is filled with tons of jobs throughout all branches. It’s easy to think of troops as collective fighting units, but within each unit, branch, battalion, etc., there are many different specific tasks that need to be accounted for. This can include a wide range of things, like performing maintenance on vehicles, logistics, trainers, administrative work, and so much more. These hundreds of job roles are defined and categorized according to their function and are collectively known as MOS, or Military Occupational Specialties. After completing the Armed Services Vocational Battery (ASVAB) test, troops will have a clearer understanding of the various career paths available to them while serving and which MOS military job works best for them.

What Is MOS in the Military?

The military MOS meaning is defined by the hundreds of roles that are available for military personnel in the Marines, Army, and Air Force. These MOS are classified into Military Occupational Fields that describe various industries within the Armed Forces. Here are some of the most common ones that help make the military function as a unit:
  • Administrative.
  • Ammunition and explosive disposal.
  • Aviation.
  • Communications.
  • Engineering.
  • Field artillery.
  • Finance.
  • Food service.
  • Infantry.
  • Intelligence.
  • Legal services.
  • Linguistics.
  • Maintenance.
  • Meteorology.
  • Utility services.
  • And much, much more!
In total, there are hundreds of jobs available, and they're all important parts of making the American Armed Forces the greatest fighting force in the world. Members of the Navy have similar roles and a similar system, but it’s its own system altogether, known as the Navy Enlisted Classification (NEC) system.

Military MOS Continues To Evolve

An interesting component of the MOS military job offerings is that not only are there so many different career paths available to troops who serve, but these opportunities continue to grow. This is due to a number of reasons, including the evolution of technology, a change of focus by the Armed Forces, and other factors creating a need for certain jobs to be performed. In 2022, the 2-year enlistment Army MOS expanded in brand new offerings that provide those who serve even more opportunities to do so. Having a career that meets your skillset and interests is ideal for any occupation. In the military, this also rings true. By having a wider variety of jobs available, troops are seeing more opportunities to hone their skills and learn new ones in fields that can help them on the battlefield as well as in civilian life. It’s important to remember that many jobs also translate into civilian life and can set up troops for opportunities beyond their service. No, you’re not likely to be in charge of working with armored tanks or handling explosives outside of the military, but it can still translate into related fields and develop both hard and soft skills for a wide range of occupations. MOS is a journey, and the expansion of its offering is helping create both a better American fighting force as well as a better country as a result.

Find Your New Vocation While Serving

Troops are provided with a great chance to enter industries that help keep the world safe from those who wish it harm as well as the chance to learn things that can help them explore wonderful industries no matter what their interest. The military is expansive in needs and opportunities, which can be seen through MOS military job offerings. A large part of what makes the American Armed Forces such a success is that the diversity in skills and scope of work cover so many aspects that other forces simply can’t compete with. Troops who work within the MOS system can take advantage to help further their interests both during their military career and well beyond.
