Housing in the local community runs the spectrum from studios, furnished and unfurnished apartments, townhomes, house rentals and new home construction as well as resale--city, suburban, small town, rural. Those seeking a more metropolitan setting may choose to live in the District. Those seeking a rural setting may choose the farther reaches of Charles, Calvert or St. Mary's Counties in Maryland. Many choose to live in Alexandria, Virginia, or to commute from further south in Virginia.
There are no mobile home lots on base.
Where you chose to live is a highly personal matter and you need to take into consideration your needs and preferences as well as those of your family. We suggest you visit the area and drive around; talk to people already here. If you plan on a house hunting TAD/TDY, consider contacting a realtor to show you around the available properties. Regardless of what you choose to do, the housing office should be your first stop. They can provide information on housing availability and lists of housing in the area tailored to your needs.
Housing Referral Office (HRO)
Your contact for any problems you may encounter (discrimination complaints, tenant/landlord disputes, or any questions/problems about off post housing) is the HRO. Staff are available to assist you in a person to person basis to make your move to this installation an easy and pleasant one. They can provide a list of rentals with corresponding locator maps and give you information regarding the area in which rentals are located.
The Housing Office is your link to both on-base and off-base housing information. Experienced, knowledgeable personnel will assist you with on-base housing assignments, as well as off-base rental and sales listings of houses and apartments within the National Capital Region NCR). If specific information regarding on-base or off-base housing is required prior to arrival, please contact the Housing Office.
NSAB is located Northwest of D.C. within the inner loop of the beltway. Local areas considered within a 60-minute commute of base during rush hour traffic include the entire area of D.C., nearly all of Montgomery County, small portions of Frederick County, and Prince Georges County in Maryland, as well as the city of Alexandria, some of Fairfax County, Loudon County, and Arlington County in Virginia. Finding a home off base is fairly easy, however, the associated costs may be higher than what you are currently paying. Pets routinely require a substantial deposit in many local area rentals.
Government off base units are available in Bellevue Housing in Washington,DC. Ft. Detrick in Frederick Maryland and Glen Haven in Wheaton, Maryland. Single Service Member Housing
Single permanent-party members in grades E-4 and below are required to reside in the barracks dormitory and must report to the barracks supervisor upon arrival for room assignment. There is limited single NCO accomidations on base but there are more located within the NCR. Geographical Bachelor housing is not available.
Currently there are only 5 military family housing (MFH) units onNaval Support Activity Bethesda (NSAB).

Depending on where you live, where your command is located, and the time of day you report to work, you are likely to encounter a lengthy commute in the Washington area. It is not unusual to spend 45-90 minutes one-way if your commute includes rush hour on any of the major arteries in the area.
