The Roseburg VA Medical Center will close its Emergency Department beginning Aug. 16, 2019, converting to an Urgent Care clinic open Monday through Friday.

The conversion is the result of staffing shortfalls that necessitate a reduction in vital emergency services provided at RVAMC during certain hours. Effective August 16, the new Urgent Care will be open from 8 a.m. through 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, and will close from 8 p.m. Friday through 8 a.m. Monday.

The Emergency Department requires a full staff to provide safe, patient-focused emergency care. Due to a shortfall in qualified providers to staff Emergency Department ancillary services, such as laboratory services, radiology services and respiratory services, the Emergency Department will convert to an extended-hours Urgent Care facility. Transitioning from an Emergency Department into an Urgent Care clinic will provide the highest level of Veteran care and maximize available resources under the MISSION Act 2018.

"We will continue to work with all our community-based health care providers to ensure our Veterans continue to receive the care they earned as servicemembers," said Keith Allen, the Roseburg VA Health Care System director. "We will continue listening to our Veterans and families, and work toward streamlining and improving VA-provided and community care access."

Veterans may check VA benefit eligibility by calling 1-833-4VETNOW or by calling the RVAHCS eligibility office at (800) 549-8387. Information outlining Veteran rights and responsibilities for use of Emergency Medical care can be found at https://www.va.gov/COMMUNITYCARE/docs/pubfiles/factsheets/FactSheet_20-02.pdf#.

Veterans and eligible family members should seek the closest available emergency care in life-threatening situations regardless of RVAMC Emergency Department and Urgent Care clinic hours of operation.
