Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson, Alaska Paratroopers with the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, U.S. Army Alaska, and other Soldiers from Alaska started their first day of Air Assault training here July 9, 2019.
More than 100 Soldiers gathered next to the obstacle course as a mobile training team from Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, provided instructions. The Soldiers started the day with physical fitness training, an Army Physical Fitness Test, followed by navigating the obstacle course.
This is the first time the instructors have come to JBER to conduct Air Assault training.
"We are happy to come out here and enable Soldiers to conduct Air Assault operations," said Sgt. 1st Class Angel Martinez, cadre member with the Lightning Academy, Schofield Baracks, Hawaii. For any Soldier wishing to attain the coveted Air Assault badge he had some advice, "Get in shape, study what we teach you, pay attention to details and you will succeed in our school."
During the next nine days students will be tested both physically and mentally. They will be required to complete a 6 and 12-mile ruck march, rappel from a tower before doing the same from a hovering helicopter. They will learn how to set up sling loads consisting of vehicles and equipment, and identify deficiencies to prevent accidents during transport operations.
"There will be times when I'll want to quit but I will just keep moving and pay attention to detail," said Sgt. Clint Poteat, a paratrooper with Headquarters, Headquarters Company, 4th IBCT (A), 25th ID. "I wanted the challenge though and having an MTT here gave me the opportunity."
The Army wants to enhance our professional relationships, training and overall coordination. The partnership between Lightning Academy instructors and Alaskan units allows the Air Assault team to visit Alaska and train Soldiers on Air Assault operations increasing their capability making them a more effective fighting force.
